Michael Aschenbrenner: Damaged Bones

"Michael Aschenbrenner is a California glass artist, a retired high school art teacher and a Vietnam veteran who creates exquisite glass bone sculptures that serve as metaphors for the beauty and fragility of human life, of the artist's experiences in Vietnam and of his coming to grips with the Vietnam War and its aftermath.

Born and raised in California, Aschenbrenner joined the Army in 1967 and was sent to Vietnam in 1968, where he broke his leg in a hilicopter jump during the Tet Offensiv. Back home in the United States, he tried to forget the Vietnam War and the horror that surrounded it. Slowly, over time, the glass leg bone - bound, bandaged, splinted and healed- began to emerge as a dominant symbol and metaphor in his work. The exhibition features sculpture from the past 20 years, including recent work from his Tool Series."
