This view shows the damage to the cella walls from the 1687 explosion of the Turkish powder magazine housed in the Parthenon. Manolis Korres, the architect in charge of the current restoration of the Parthenon, has identified hundreds of blocks belonging to the cella walls amongst the massive marble piles on the Akropolis. He is planning a partial restoration of these walls. Originally, there were 3921 hand-carved Pentelic marble blocks in the cella walls. Each weighed between 2.7 and 7 tons.
