EVENTS and PROGRAMS University Convocation Planned and facilitated by the interdisciplinary class, "Convo:
Campus/Community/Cosmos," the University Convocation series brings
speakers, musicians or other performers -- often with a spiritual or ethical
message -- to campus every week.
In observance of Good Friday, the Stations of the Cross will be set up in the windows of Cone Chapel during morning prayer and meditation time and into the mid-afternoon (except during the Good Friday service at noon). This particular meditation, “the Way of the Cross continues...,,” is the work of the Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers in New York and uses pictures of fairly recent events and circumstances to recall Jesus’ journey through Jerusalem to Golgotha and then the tomb. Guided meditation booklets will be available at the first station.
A labyrinth is an ancient symbol (over 3,500 years old) representing wholeness. When this symbol is transferred to the ground and walked with purpose, it becomes a metaphor for the journey of life. It is a single path to our center, the inner self; a slowing down and listening, then returning to the outer world feeling renewed and rejuvenated. The benefits include stress reduction, relaxation and stillness along with the opportunity to open to our intuition and creativity.
Chaplains Charlie Wallace and Karen Wood and several students will lead a Good Friday worship service that will include readings, prayer and contemplative song.
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world” is a one-day workshop on nonviolence facilitated by Cathey and Charles Busch of Peace Village. By means of story telling and participatory exercises, this workshop explores the paradox of gentle power and provides six practices for making nonviolence a way of life. To pre-register for this free workshop, please send your name, phone number and email address to chaplain@willamette.edu.
This interfaith service, planned by a committee of graduating
seniors and the chaplains, will be held as part of Commencement activities and will include music, scripture from a variety of traditions
and reflections by graduates and others.
