Not Unto Ourselves Alone...
Service to the University
Classified staff are represented on almost every campus-wide committee, providing reports at Council meetings to keep classified employees informed of what’s happening in our Willamette community. They serve on the University Occupational Safety and Health Committee, Facilities Planning Committee, the Benefits Committee, and various administrative search committees, just to name a few.
Classified Staff Scholarship Fund
The Classified Staff Scholarship was created by Willamette University classified employees and the Classified Council to assist students with financial need defray the cost of books and/or tuition. Applicants for the $700 annual award may be returning students from the College of Liberal Arts, the College of Law, or the Atkinson Graduate School of Management with a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.25 for CLA students or 3.0 for graduate students.
Funding for the scholarship was initially from sales of A Taste of Willamette, a cookbook featuring recipes submitted by classified staff, faculty, administrators, and Bistro Willamette. Ongoing funding comes from individual contributions and the proceeds of the Council's annual Parking Lot Sale and Craft/Bake Sale.
Service to the Community
The 230+ Classified Staff of Willamette University raise money throughout the year to donate to numerous non-profit agencies and projects, including the American Red Cross, Marion-Polk Food Share, Willamette Academy and the Willamette Take-a-Break program.
At our Classified Staff luncheons a 50/50 drawing is held. The winner keeps half of the money collected and chooses a local non-profit to receive the other half. Recently the drawings have resulted in contributions to:
Community Service Learning's Socks for the Homeless Project
Classified Staff Scholarship Fund
Friends of Felines
Mid-Valley Women's Crisis Center
Willamette Academy (2)
2013 WU Gala of Trees Project
Humane Society of the Willamette Valley (3)
West Salem Foursquare Dream Center
Each year a Classified Council sub-committee, made up of people from all segments of the campus community, organizes the design and creation of decorations and accompanying gifts for a submission to the annual Gala of Trees at the Salem Convention Center. Just before the Gala evening, the tree is decorated by a group of university "elves." The donated trees are auctioned to benefit the work of the Boys and Girls Aid Society. Willamette's trees are always a hit!
2011 - 'Twas the Ride Before Christmas - auction price: $2,000
2012 - A Quiet Moment in Nature - auction price: $2,600
The Council and classified staff are also actively involved in other service projects on campus, such as Into the Streets (part of Willamette's Martin Luther King, Jr. Observance), Take-a-Break (serving as trip advisors, and the annual Rotary Food Drive to benefit Marion-Polk Food Share. They also provide financial and direct service contributions as individuals to a wide variety of non-profit organizations.
