Recognition and Awards

  • Willamette University was one of six universities to receive the 2009 Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll Presidential Award for exemplary service to America's communities and for special focus on programs with youth from disadvantaged circumstances

    • 28 community organizations in cities located throughout the United States
    • 11 community organizations in cities located around the world

 Service-Learning

  • 20 service-learning classes
  • 406 students participating in service-learning classes/class components
  • 14,665 hours of service
  • 11 disciplines represented (Education, Environmental Science, History, Interdisciplinary Studies, Latin American Studies, Political Science, Psychology, Religion, Rhetoric, Sociology, and Spanish)

 Bush Elementary Tutoring and Mentoring Program

  • 34 Willamette student volunteers provided approximately 544 hours of service through in class room assistance at Bush Elementary School (7 students served 94 hours independently; 27 students served 450 hours through service-learning courses)
  • The Tiger Club program included 29 Willamette student volunteers and 35 Tiger Club participants (Fall 2009 - 19 Willamette volunteers and 30 Tiger Club students; Spring 2010 - 19 Willamette volunteers and 30 Tiger Club students) who provided 650 hours of service through afterschool program assistance

 JumpStart: New Student Orientation to Community Outreach (NSOCO)

  • 5 student leaders, 24 Willamette participants, and 2 TIUA participants provided 530 hours of service to 13 community organizations (OR School for the Deaf Community Garden, City of Salem Parks and Recreation, Union Gospel Mission, Family Building Blocks, Willamette Humane Society, Marion Polk Food Share, Colonia Libertad, Bush Elementary School, Juntos Podemos, Wilson Retirement Center, Salem Hospital, HOME Youth Resource Center and the Chemawa Indian School)

 Take a Break (TaB) alternative spring break

  • 5 trips were offered to New Orleans, Portland, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Immigration NW
  • 1 program director, 3 coordinators, 10 trip facilitators, 7 trip advisors, and 50 participants provided approximately 1,900 of service to 33 non-profit organizations

 Student Organizations 

  • Best Buddies - Through partnership with the Willamette Valley Down Syndrome Association, 12 members provided approximately 350 hours of service by forming one-to-one friendships with their buddies, individuals in the community with developmental disabilities. Members participated in two group events per month with activities such as movies, kick-ball, and community service.
  • Bearcats Offering Others Meals (BOOM) - 30 members provided 250 hours of service to the community by serving bi-weekly hot breakfasts at the Salvation Army to individuals who are homeless.
  • Sexual Assault Response Allies (SARA) - 14 active members provided hotline service every weekend and walk-in office hours support twice a week. Members also supported Reality Check, Sex Signals, Sexual Assault Awareness Week, Take Back the Night, and hosted University of Oregon's Sexual Wellness Advocacy Team on campus.
  • Student Alliance to End Fistula - The Student Alliance to End Fistula hosted their fourth annual Fashion for Women's Dignity event in March. The show included both students and faculty this year and raised $2,200 for Women's Dignity Project, located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
  • Willamette Garden and Compost Society -15 core members provided approximately 85 hours of service as they supported compost efforts on campus and helped out each week at Zena Farm, building and tending to the compost piles.
  • Willamette Students for Haiti - Approximately 15 students provided 120 hours of service writing letters, planning collaborative fundraising events on campus, collecting meal points/tabling in Goudy, and supporting relief efforts through technology at CrisisCamp Salem. With Willamette Students for Haiti's help, the Willamette community collected over $4,000 to support relief efforts in Haiti.
  • Kaneko Community Partnership Committee - 30 members provided 200 hours of service with the South East Salem Neighborhood Community Center serving dinners, raking leaves, participating in community garden work parties, volunteering at the after school program, and sponsoring a rummage sale fundraiser.
  • Opening Days Service Project - Approximately 550 students provided 1,100 hours of service to 31 community organizations through collaboration with HandsOn Mid-Willamette Valley
  • Bead for Life - 10 students volunteered approximately 20 hours and collected $1,465 through Bead for Life to support the work efforts of impoverished women in Uganda.
  • Blankets for Burritos - 1 student leader and 6 student volunteers collected 10 blankets and $125 for homeless and at-risk youth receiving support through HOME Youth Resource Center
  • Pan-Hellenic Council Into the Streets Service Project - 100 sorority members provided approximately 200 hours of service to Mano a Mano Family Center as they painted the organization's office space
