Agency Description:

AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is a program designed to support college readiness. AVID’s teaching strategies are used not only in the AVID elective class, but by subject area teachers schoolwide. Some AVID strategies include, Cornell Notes, Socratic seminar, Philosophical Chairs and interactive notebooks. Students benefit from instructional strategies that encourage critical thinking.

Opportunity Description:

Salem/Keizer school district is looking for students who are interested in tutoring in middle school and high school AVID classrooms.  Tutoring can be accomplished through University work-study programs (if the university offers it), for credit courses as appropriate, or can be done for pay as a Salem/Keizer tutor employee through the district AVID program. Tutoring is done during the school day with a broad choice of hours, days, and AVID school sites.  Additional tutoring sites will become available next year as more schools take on the AVID curriculum. Opportunity Description:

We need tutors to come in 2-3 times a week and tutor the teens at our program that need some extra help with their school work. Specifically we are looking for math, english and foreign language tutors (French and Spanish) but any other subject would be great too.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is a character development program that encourages preteen girls to develop self-respect and healthy lifestyles through physical activity, lessons, and mentoring, Girls on the Run is designed for girls in grades 3rd – 5th while its sister program, Girls on Track (GOT), is for girls in grades 6th -8th grades. Both groups, which consist of 12 t o 15 girls will meet two times per week after school for 90 minutes and are led by coaches who have completed the GOTR coaches training.

Opportunity Description:

GOTR is seeking volunteers to fill our Volunteer Coach/Assistant Coach position!

Coaching is the most hands on way to work with the Girls on the Run participants. You get to experience the program first hand, feel a sense of accomplishment that you have made a difference in the lives of the girls and have a ton of fun with your team of coaches and incredible girls! This volunteer position works closely with the assistant coach, council director and other coaches to facilitate the Girls on the Run curriculum to participants.

The Northwest Human Services, HOST Youth and Family Program is an emergency youth shelter for homeless and runaway youth ages 11-18.  We are typically a two week program and some of our services are:  family mediation, counseling, case management, parenting classes, etc.  Often times we get youth who need mentoring and/or tutoring.

Our School Judson is a traditional middle school serving students in grades 6 - 8. Average enrollment for our school is 910 students.

Opportunity Description:

Judson Middle School is in need of volunteers to mentor and tutor their students. Their most immediate need is for math tutors Monday - Friday from 10:45 - 11:30 am for a math class. Math tutors are also needed Monday - Friday 8:10 - 2:40 pm to work with small groups and individual students. Math tutors are also needed Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 2:40 - 4:20 pm to work with Home Work Club after school. Mentors are needed to work with male students, preferably during lunch periods one day a week. First lunch 10:42 - 11:12; Second lunch 11:35 - 11:43, and Third lunch 12:26 - 12:56. The McKay Area Coalition for Student Success (MACSS) recruits, screens, and places volunteers in roles identified by McKay High School, Stephens and Waldo middle schools and a number of the area elementary schools. McKay High has been identified by some of their low test score as the school with the higher need for community and volunteer involvement. That is why MACSS has decided to focus their attention into supporting McKay and all of its feeder school.

Mid-Valley Mentors is a non-profit organization that provides mentoring to at-risk youth in Marion, Polk and Yamhill counties.  We work with children of incarcerated parents, juvenile offenders, at-risk youth, and gang affected youth. 

Opportunity Description:

The Oregon State Library has a variety of volunteer needs:

(1) Cassette Machine Cleaning Volunteers (once per week for 2 hours with a 3-6 month commitment) to clean returned cassette players for the Talking Book and Braille Services;

(2) Book and Document Mender Volunteer (once per week for 2 hours with a 6 month commitment) to repair damaged library materials in the collection;

(3) Book Inspection Volunteers (once per week for 2 hours with a 6 month commitment) to assist the Circulation staff in the inspection of returned Talking Book cassettes for the Talking Book and Braille Services; and

(4) Genealogy Information Assistant Volunteers (once per week for 3 or 4 hours) to assist patrons in researching family history using databases, microfilm, and printed resources.
