Contribute to Take a Break

Take a Break is organized by students and is funded through their fundraising efforts, in addition to support from the Lilly Project. All of the leaders volunteer their time to creating this amazing educational experience for their peers in benefit of the nation’s most disadvantaged communities. Each participant is expected to raise an average of $600. The program honors simplicity, keeping costs to a bare minimum by sleeping on a floor donated by a local agency or tent camping, cooking basic meals, and using mass transit when available. The program costs include air travel, van rental and gas, food, and supplies needed to conduct service. Each trip consists of 15 participants. Trips within driving distance cost approximately $5,000 and trips we need to fly to cost approximately $10,000. On average our total program costs annually is $50,000. Willamette University is a 501 (c) (3) not-for-profit organization. Your donations are tax deductible and greatly appreciated.

Ways to Give

Monetary Donations

Monetary donations can provide scholarships for student participants. You can indicate a specific student to sponsor, or you can allow us to select a student in need of sponsorship. Donations can also be applied to a specific program cost, such as travel, food, or service supplies. Alternatively, you can indicate a specific trip you would like to help fund or a specific issue that you have a passion for, such as disaster relief or literacy. Find out where we're headed in 2007 and what issues we'll address once we get there.

To donate online, please use the Willamette University Online Donation form. Important: When completing the form, select a designation of "Other" and specify "Take a Break". To direct your donation to a specific need, enter the name or title of the student, supply, cause or location. (Examples: "Take a Break: Jane Doe"; "Take a Break: Travel"; "Take a Break: Disaster Relief"; "Take a Break: San Francisco".)

A look at the numbers:

  • Sponsor one student for one day: $85
  • Sponsor lodging for one student for the entire trip: $80
  • Sponsor food for one student for one day: $10

To make a donation via mail, submit your donation to Take a Break, Willamette University, 900 State Street, Salem, OR, 97301. Please make checks payable to Willamette University/Take a Break. To direct your donation to a specific need, please include a letter with the name or title of the student, supply, cause or location you'd like to sponsor.

In-Kind Donations

Fundraisers

Our participants engage in a variety of local fundraisers such as bake sales, raffles, and auctions. Corporations can donate items to these efforts or demonstrate support by attending these events.
