Loan Application Process

Federal Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loan:

(PLEASE NOTE: Direct Subsidized Loans will not be available for graduate students after July 1, 2012.  The Office of Financial Aid will determine your eligibility for Direct Subsidized Loans.)

  1. Determine the amount of Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans you need. Please borrow as little as possible to ensure successful repayment.
  2. Return your signed Award Acceptance Form, indicating the amount of Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans you wish to borrow (up to the maximum amount listed on your award notice).
  3. Submit all requested documents and information to the Office of Financial Aid. Once your file is complete, we will electronically process your Direct Subsidized/Unsubsidized Loans
  4. Complete your Master Promissory Note (MPN). This process can be completed online at www.studentloans.gov. You will need your federal PIN to electronically sign your MPN. This is the same PIN you used to sign your FAFSA. More information on your PIN is available online at www.pin.ed.gov.
  5. Complete an Entrance Counseling Session. This can be done online at www.studentloans.gov. You will need to complete only one session for both the Stafford and Graduate PLUS loans.
  6. You will be notified once your loans has been disbursed. Loan funds will be credited to your student account within a few days of Willamette receiving the funds. Loan funds will first be applied to outstanding tuition and fees; if you have a credit remaining, a check will be issued to you just prior to the start of the semester.
 Please note: No loan can be processed after you cease to be enrolled at least half time at Willamette, including after a semester ends.

Federal Direct Graduate PLUS:

  1. Determine the amount of Graduate PLUS Loan you need.  
  2. Return your signed Award Acceptance Form, indicating the amount of Graduate PLUS Loan you wish to borrow (up to the maximum amount listed on your award notice). Please initial the authorization for Willamette University and the Department of Education to pull your credit report on your Award Acceptance Form.  Your Graduate PLUS loan can not be processed if you have not initialed the authorization.
  3. Submit all requested documents and information to the Office of Financial Aid.  Once your file is complete, we will electronically process your Stafford Loans
