2012-13 Academic Year Student Health Insurance Information
Federal Health Care Reform Requires Increased Coverage for Willamette Students
The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was passed on March 23, 2010. On March 16, 2012 Health and Human Services ruled that insurance provided by a university for students must follow the PPACA guidelines. As a result of this ruling, the 2012-13 Willamette Student Health Insurance plan will offer comprehensive coverage that will support a student’s well-being and peace of mind while meeting the requirements of the PPACA and the US Dept. of Health & Human Services.

Insurance Requirement & Waiving Information
Willamette University will continue to require that all degree seeking half time or more domestic students and all international students carry medical insurance coverage comparable to that offered through the school’s comprehensive Student Health Plan. Student accounts will be charged the insurance fee up front at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters. Students with other medical insurance who wish to opt out of the Willamette Student Health Plan must complete a waiver each academic year. A waiver will require comparable coverage to the Willamette Student Health Plan.
Waiving deadlines and instructions will be available by July 16, 2012.
See chart for specific program credit requirement information.
Note: It is not necessary to be enrolled in the Willamette University Student Insurance plan to access medical or mental health services at Bishop Wellness Center. Many services at Bishop are provided at no charge to students.
