The Willamette University Motto Award
The Willamette University Motto Award acknowledges performance that demonstrates our commitment to community service; collaboration between faculty, staff and students; and civic engagement. The University’s motto, Non Nobis Solum Nati Sumus (Not Unto Ourselves Alone Are We Born) is an aspirational theme that both unites and affirms the common educational purposes of Willamette’s liberal arts undergraduate college and its three professional schools. Throughout Willamette’s history, our motto has meant much more than valuing community service. The motto asks us to develop our full potential and to use our talents and abilities to engage meaningfully with the world.
The Classified staff member who received the Willamette University Motto Award this year was Honey Wilson, Administrative Assistant II – Olin Science Building.
The Administrative winner of the Willamette University Motto Award was Bill Kelm, Systems Librarian for the Hatfield Library.

This award is named for Alvan F. Waller, who carried on the traditions of service and devotion as established by Jason Lee. It was Alvan Waller, as the University’s agent, who bore the responsibility for developing the financial well-being of the University as it grew. He raised the funds and supervised the construction of what is now known as Waller Hall, which was completed in 1867.

The Buzz Yocom Campus Service Award
The Buzz Yocom Campus Service Award recognizes outstanding service to faculty, staff, students, alumni, and other constituents; and for improving the quality of work and campus life in ways that make a substantial difference for colleagues and constituents.
The namesake of this award, Richard ‘Buzz’ Yocom, was someone who went above and beyond in his commitment to current students and the Willamette community as a whole. Buzz was a member of the Class of 1949 and in 1955 started his 43 years of service to Willamette. He held many different positions from Dean of Admissions to Registrar to Director of International Education to Assistant to the President. He also taught part-time in the Psychology Department. When Buzz retired from Willamette in 1993, he was asked to serve as Director of Tokyo International University of America. Beyond his many professional titles, his most enduring legacy is his deep and sincere commitment to the students, faculty and staff he worked with on a daily basis. His generosity of time, energy and spirit over the decades are represented and honored through this award.
The Administrative winner of the Buzz Yocom Campus Service award was Joshua Bilbrew, Program Director for Willamette Academy.
