General Pre-Departure Meeting

This is a mandatory meeting for all students participating on Willamette University Sponsored Study Abroad Programs during the Spring 09 semester.

Monday, September 8th –

Study Abroad Fair
Cat Cavern Dining Rooms
11:00am to 1:30pm

Students interested in studying abroad during the 2009-2010 academic year should visit the fair to find resources about study abroad opportunities at WU. Students who have returned from the study abroad programs will be at the fair ready to talk about their own experiences.

International Photo and Essay Contest Deadline

Have you spent time in another country? Are you an international student?

Enter the International Photo or Essay Contest!

Submission guidelines:

  • A maximum of ten submissions per student.
  • ESSAY - Please limit essays to a maximum of about 750 words – write about anything related to an experience abroad (i.e. journal entry, specific event, learning experience.)
  • PHOTOS-
  • With each photo include a caption with your name, location of the photo and a reflective caption at least 50-100 words in length. Submissions without full captions will not be considered.
  • Questions to help guide your reflective caption: (1) What inspired you to take the picture? (2)What is the context of your photo? (3) How did you feel when the photo was taken?  (4) Have your feelings changed since then? (5) Why is this image significant to you and your international experience?
  • The quality of the captions will be considered when judging the photos.
  • Photos should be set at medium to high resolution to allow for enlargement to 81/2’’x 10’’ (most digital camera pictures are fine.)
  • Submissions cannot be returned, by submitting to the contest you are giving Willamette University permission to reproduce these works in publications and/or displays.  Please let us know if you have questions or concerns.
  • Email essays, photos and captions to iweekphotocontest@gmail.com
  • All essay and photo contest participants are automatically entered into the drawing for the iPod Shuffle.

Wednesday, September 10th -

Language in Motion Information Sessions
12noon OR 6:30 in the Fireside Room (near the Writing Center)

If you are an international student or a student returned from study abroad find out how you can share your international perspectives and experiences with children (K-12) in the Salem-Keizer School District. This is a great way to complement your abroad experience and pass on your knowledge to local schoolchildren.

Thursday, September 11th –

International Booths at the Activities Fair
1:30 to 4:30  - Quad


Visit the TIUA and Office of International Education booths at the Activities Fair (sponsored by Student Activities) in the Quad between 1:30 and 4:30. Students will be sharing cultural activities from around the world; there will also be snacks for your enjoyment. Come join us!

Friday, September 12th -

Community Service Opportunity
1:45  – meet at Chicken Fountain

Spend the afternoon participating in a service event. This is a great way to meet some of the international students on our campus and find out more about the service opportunities in Salem. Contact Amy <aniles> ASAP because space is limited.
