Brussels is the de facto capital of the 28 State European Union,  as it hosts a number of principal EU institutions. Brussels is officially bi-lingual in French and Dutch, but French is the lingua franca in the city. It is well-known for waffles, chocolate, fries and beer. The city center retains a medieval core and visitors can learn more about art nouveau, contemporary art, Old Dutch Masters, surrealists, and comic strips–all of which enjoy ample representation in the city’s museums.

Ghent

Ghent is the capital of East Flanders which is in the Flemish region of Belgium. This is a lovely city that became a powerhouse in the wool and cloth trade during the Middle Ages. It still retains significant architecture from its medieval past including Gravensteen  Castle and many canals. Paradoxically, the city does not host many tourists, but it is full of students due to its six universities. The total student population in Ghent tops 50,000 people.

About Aalborg

With its 137,000 inhabitants, Aalborg is now Denmark's fourth largest city and one of the most important trade and industrial centers in the country. From Aalborg, it is not far to the white beaches of the North Sea, to the forest of Rold, the lovely Rebild Hills or the slopes of the Jutlandic Ridge. Almost 35% of the city’s population are students of higher education, which gives the city a unique character full of life (AAU 2017) (UCN 2017). This is clearly seen at the city’s cafés, restaurants and various attractions. Furthermore, the city has continuously been named the happiest city in Europe (Martin 2016), which is quite remarkable as Denmark has been named the happiest country in the world for many years (CBS News 2017).

Aalborg University is a medium sized university with about 20,000 students including about 2,700 international students. The university is based on real-life problem-based learning ending each semester with a large group project. This model, known as the Aalborg Model, has been internationally recognized and led to the appointment of AAU as UNESCO Chair in problem-based learning.

In 2019, Aalborg was named one of the 52 Places to Go by the New York Times.

There are some aspects of Iceland that will be familiar to Pacific Northwest students who choose to study at the Icelandic Academy of the Arts in Reykjavik. The Icelandic landscape is marked by volcanoes and hot springs, Icelanders enjoy a relatively mild winter and cool summers, and residents of Reykjavik can fish for salmon within the city limits. Other aspects of Iceland might feel like they are taken directly from a Nordic saga. The medieval Icelandic dialect of the sagas is similar enough to today’s language that ordinary people can read the original texts. The eerie and beautiful aurora borealis is visible nine months of the year. Iceland is so far north that from May to July there is nearly constant daylight. This contrasts with nearly 30 days in Winter with 19 hour stretches of darkness.

The Irish Diaspora and the American Frontier: a History in Two Acts

In this course, students will explore the experiences of two distinct Irish immigrant groups, each of which played a role in defining, expanding, and ultimately closing the western American frontier. In a broad sense, Irish immigration to the British Colonies/United States can be understood as taking place in two waves: Scots-Irish Protestants from Northern Ireland arrived during the 18th century, settling largely at the western boundary of the emerging colonial frontier: the Appalachian Mountains. Roughly a century later—peaking during the Great Hunger in the eighteen-forties and -fifties—Irish Catholics arrived en masse, fleeing prejudicial British policies and the serial failure of the potato crop. While many of these later Irish migrants settled in the burgeoning urban areas of a rapidly industrializing America, a number of them found their way west and played an instrumental role in the construction of the trans-continental railway, an effort that contributed to the “closing” of the frontier West.

No pre-requisite.
