International Education

Linköping, Sweden

Overview

At 130,000 inhabitants, Linköping is Sweden's fifth largest city, yet it has a friendly small town atmosphere. Second hand bicycles are students' main form of transportation. WU students study at the Linköping University. You also enroll in the university's Erasmus programs--class designed for European community students that are conducted in English. Find information for exchange students through Linköping’s International Offices.

Academics

While studying at the Linköping University students take regular university courses taught in English and can choose to take a beginning level Swedish language course. A pre-semester Intensive Swedish Language Course is available before the fall and spring semesters. Courses are available for a large range of majors. Find a list of courses in English on Linköping's website. Computer Science, Environmental Science, and International Studies majors are encouraged to consider Linköping. Although Linköping offers courses in Biology and Chemistry many are masters level and therefore not transferable to Willamette. Please contact an advisor with any questions about courses.

Housing

Students live in university housing with other international and Swedish students. The accommodation is located near the campus.

Dates

The Linköping program is available during either fall or spring semester. The fall semester starts mid August and ends mid January; spring semester starts mid January and ends early June. Although the fall semester ends in January, many courses end in late December. Also, it may be possible for students to take their finals early or when they return to Willamette, however, students must make arrangements with their professors when they arrive at Linköping to take the finals early or after they are back in the U.S. Professors are not obligated to allow changes to the finals schedule or location. Students considering studying at Linköping during the fall semester should contact the Study Abroad Advisor.

Cost

Please see the Willamette Sponsored Programs Cost Matrix for detailed explanation of the cost of each program.

Other Information

A “host family” program is available for students who would like to spend time with and get to know a Swedish family. Students and families plan time to get together at their mutual convenience.
