KET Program: Teaching English in Kawagoe, Japan
Important Note: Application deadline is Monday, February 18th, 2013 at 4 p.m. A complete application package must be submitted to the Office of International Education in the Matthews Center for Intercultural Learning. Incomplete application packets will not be forwarded for consideration!
Kawagoe, Japan is the sister city to Salem, Oregon. It is the home to Tokyo International University, the partner university of Willamette University. Many people are familiar with the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) program, but there is also a KET program that is based in Kawagoe and that prioritizes hiring WU graduates to teach English. The contract year for the KET program is August 1, 2013 to July 31, 2014. This year the City of Kawagoe Education Center is planning to hire one (1) assistant English teacher (AET). To qualify, you must be a graduating student from Willamette University by May 2013. WU graduates who graduated in prior years are eligible to apply.
The Office of International Education DOES NOT hire persons selected for the KET Program. We are simply coordinating the application materials for the Kawagoe Education Center. Following the WU deadline, materials will be forwarded to Kawagoe for review and selection. Applicants will be notified (typically no later than early May) by the Kawagoe Education Center of the results of their application.
BEFORE APPLYING, please download and read the KET Program Explanation document (click here to download) which outlines the parameters of the contract. You should only apply if you agree with all of the conditions outlined in this document.
To apply, please submit the following as one application packet (in one envelope) to the Office of International Education:
- Application form (click here to download)
- 6 photographs (passport size, formal/professional photos) taken within the past 6 months (attach to the application form in an envelope)
- Self-Assessment Medical Report (last page of the application)
- Letter of Reference (1 letter is required)
- Official transcript for all college/university courses (you must submit from all universities you've attended)
- Certificate of graduation from college or university. If you have not already graduated, you must submit a letter from the registrar's office confirming your expected date of graduation.
Remember the deadline to submit materials is Monday, February 18, 2013 at 4 p.m. to the Office of International Education (Matthews Center for Intercultural Learning).
** If you are currently abroad, you can mail your complete application packet directly to Kawagoe (address is in KET explanation, linked above) but the materials must be received no later than February 18, 2013. **
NEW!!! A helpful guide to Kawagoe was recently created by students in the School of Language Communication (SLC) at Tokyo International University in Japan. You can link to it here.
