Health Insurance
Health care is very expensive in the United States, therefore, Willamette University international students and scholars and their accompanying family members are required to have health and accident insurance each semester students are registered for classes.
Willamette provides a very good student health insurance plan that meets and exceeds the requirements of the U.S. Affordable Care Act. This plan also meets and exceeds the requirements for health insurance for "J" visa students/scholars. The insurance premium for the semester is automatically added to your bill at the beginning of each semester. Payment is required at the time tuition and other charges are paid, after your arrival.
Insurance Enrollment
Although you will be enrolled in the health insurance plan if you do nothing, it is helpful to us to know if you want to enroll in the Willamette Student Health Insurance. Please complete Option A on the Insurance Enrollment and Waiver Application form that is available on the International Student Insurance webpage. Download and print the form you need by clicking in the link in the column on the righthand side of the page. Return the form as soon as you can. Even if you do not complete this enrollment form, you will be enrolled in the plan. Cost and summary of coverage are available on the Student Insurance website. The cost and coverage is the SAME for ALL Willamette University students whether they are international or domestic. The Enrollment/Waiver deadline for international students is DIFFERENT than that of domestic students.
Questions regarding the health insurance policy, cost, and what it covers can be directed to Julie Prieto at 503-370-6972 or bishop-insurance@willamette.edu.
Questions regarding the waiver process can be directed to Ramona in the Office of International Education.
Insurance Waiver Requirements
It is possible to decline Willamette's insurance if proof of comparable insurance is provided by the deadline, each semester. An insurance waiver is not guaranteed and is dependent on the approval of your insurance plan by the Office of International Education. You may submit your waiver application as soon as you have all the information you need and the application completed, even before you arrive.
If you are approved for an insurance waiver, the charges for the Willamette health insurance will be deducted from your student account.
If you are not approved or do not apply for a waiver, you will be automatically enrolled in the Willamette University Student Health Insurance Plan through Aetna. The Insurance Enrollment and Waiver Application form is available on the International Student Insurance webpage. Download and print the form you need by clicking in the link in the column on the righthand side of the page. Follow the instructions carefully and return the form by the deadline to the Office of International Education. Late waiver requests will not be considered. To apply for a waiver, you will need a photocopy of your insurance card, a photocopy of your policy information that shows the coverage described in the waiver application, and the completed Waiver application.
