Insurance

Due to the high cost of health care in the United States, Willamette University international students and their accompanying family members are required (each semester students are registered for classes) to have health and accident insurance equal to or greater than the following coverage:

  • Medical benefits no less than $50,000 per accident or illness
  • Medical evacuation (assisted transportation to home country provided to a seriously ill person) to the insured's home country no less than $10,000
  • Repatriation (transportation of dead body to home country) of remains no less than $7,500
  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness

Willamette offers a health insurance plan that meets and exceeds the above requirements. The cost varies each year, so contact our office (candrese@willamette.edu or 503-375-5404) for exact amounts.

The insurance premium for six months is automatically added to your bill at the beginning of each semester. Payment is required at the time tuition and other charges are paid. It is possible to decline Willamette's insurance if proof of comparable insurance is provided each semester.

If you have an insurance policy which meets the above requirements, you must obtain a copy of your health insurance policy, written in English, and bring it to the International Education Office (to be evaluated for compliance) by the first day of classes each semester.

If the International Education office finds that your current policy meets the following requirements and includes the following information, you will not be charged for the Willamette-provided health insurance:

  • Medical benefits of at least $50,000 per accident or illness
  • Expenses in the amount of $10,000 associated with medical evacuation to the insured person's home country
  • Repatriation of remains (in the case of death) in the amount of $7,000
  • A deductible not to exceed $500 per accident or illness
  • Benefits must be payable in the United States
  • Term of coverage (beginning and ending dates) must be in effect throughout the entire semester and be renewable for continuing coverage
  • Maximum dollar coverage for each accident or illness
  • List of covered services
  • List of excluded services
  • Insured person's name
  • Address and telephone number of the insurance company

If you have questions about this health insurance requirement, contact Chris Andresen (candrese@willamette.edu or 503-375-5404). More details about insurance are provided during orientation and you can always get information by visiting the International Education office, which is located in Matthews Hall, room 110.
