7:30 p.m.Theatre Production: Orlando by Virgnia Woolf, adapted by Sarah Ruhl
M. Lee Pelton Theatre
An English nobleman awakens one morning to discover he has become a woman. This is the premise of Virginia Woolf’s acclaimed, vaguely autobiographical novel, “Orlando.” Adapted by MacArthur Award-winning playwright Sarah Ruhl, “Orlando” is funny and bittersweet, literate but highly accessible. It invites us to ask what we mean when we talk about identity, gender, poetry, and love. Learn more atwillamette.edu/arts/theatre

Guaranteed to elicit hysterical laughter and raise LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) awareness Guess the Straight Person is presented at Family Weekend in honor of National Coming Out Day (October 11, 2012). At the event, a panel of ten to fifteen students volunteers, only two of whom identify as “straight,” will be asked a series of questions.  Panelists will answer the questions one by one and at the end of the evening, the audience will hold a vote to see if they have what it takes to weave through the stereotypes and identify the only two students who identify as straight. PFLAG (Parents, Family, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and councilors will be available to support students and families.  For questions about Angles or Guess the Straight Person, contact the Angles president Joseph Campbell at jcampbel@willamette.edu.

For over ten years, Willamette Academy at Willamette University has been working to help local high school students achieve their dream of becoming the first person in their families to attend college through our after school, weekend and summer programs.  Willamette University students provide thousands of volunteer hours each year helping with academic support, tutoring and mentoring services so that promising young students who face innumerable barriers to success can truly achieve their potential.

Though our primary goal is to help students to graduate from high school and attend college, students gain so much more from the Academy program and our Willamette University students: confidence, self-awareness, life skills, leadership skills, and a sense of responsibility to their community.   To date: 99 percent of Willamette Academy students have graduated from high school and 95% have gone on to the college of their choice.

We hope you will stop by on Sunday, October 14th for our open house and student art show.  You will be able to meet some of our Academy students, Willamette University volunteers and staff as well as enjoy a tasty treat!
