1. I’m a new leader and don’t know where to start--what should I do?

The student organization handbook is a great place to start learning about WU policies, best practices, and processes.  Once you’ve read through that, you may have some specific questions--making an appointment with one of the leadership consultants is the next step.

2. I want to plan an event with my club. How can I go about finding out how to do that?

Event planning is a great way to get some good experiences within your club. In the Student Organization Handbook there is a step-by-step process of everything you need to do. If you have any questions about the event planning checklist on pages 29-32, please stop by and talk to a Leadership Consultant.

3. I want to start a new club, can you help me do that?

Yes! There are checklists for how to start a new organization and there are constitution templates to help you register new clubs. It might take a lot of work, but the Leadership Consultants are here to support you and help you get your new organization off the ground.

4. My organization needs members, how can we recruit more?

Recruitment is a very important, but sometimes difficult, part of being a student organization. Start by targeting your recruiting efforts and think about what groups on campus might be especially interested in what your club is trying to accomplish. Once you identify some, start sending emails or putting up fliers about how to get involved in your club. Another great thing to do is have each current member talk to 3 friends about why they love your club. Once members start talking about the benefits of putting their time into it others will be more likely to join!

5. I didn’t get any transition materials, what exactly should I be doing with my club?

Renee Jaime has every organization’s constitution in her office in the Office of Student Activities. Come to her office and she can help you find all of the registration paperwork for your organization. Once you have a good idea of what your organization was designed to do, plan out creating your own transition materials that you can pass down to the next leaders. The Leadership Consultants also offer workshops for all students specifically about transitioning, so you can talk to an LC and attend one of those so next year's leaders aren't in the same boat as you!

6. I’m not getting along with the other leaders of my club, what should I do?

The Leadership Consultants can help you develop strategies for how to constructively resolve communication and leadership issues.
