Family Weekend is filled with exciting events, many of which are free and do not require a ticket! Below is a list of on campus Family Weekend events that can be enjoyed free of charge.
Friday, October 14
10 a.m.-5 p.m.Hallie Ford Museum of Art open

3-5 p.m.Willamette Career Center Open House
Putnam University Center, 3rd Floor
The friendly staff of Career Services will provide parents with an introduction to the resources offered by the Career Center and WU. Find out how we can work together to help your student think about and pursue a career. Also, you can learn about exciting internship and employment opportunities and register your student for the Virtual Career Center.

Take this opportunity to get acquainted with the many resources that Willamette has to offer. Get questions answered, enjoy light refreshments and kick off Family Weekend with Willamette’s new president, Stephen Thorsett.
4:30-5:30 p.m.Historic Downtown Salem Walking Tour
Downtown - leave from Hatfield Fountain
This is an opportunity to become better acquainted with downtown historic Salem. Join us on this walking tour and learn what Oregon's capitol city has to offer.
2:30–3:30 p.m.The Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Gallery Opening Events: Reception and Tribal Blessing
Hallie Ford Museum of Art, 700 State Street
The weekend of October 14–15 marks the grand re-opening of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Gallery, which houses the Hallie Ford Museum of Art’s permanent collection of Native American art. The newly reconfigured gallery focuses on the dynamic relationship that exists between historic and contemporary Native American art and will feature a new layout, new display cases, new lighting, a new color scheme and a new storyline. A blessing will be conducted by Native American artists at 6 p.m.
7:30 p.m.Jazz Night
Smith Auditorium (Doors open 30 minutes before music performances)
Don’t miss this opportunity to be amazed by the musical talents of Willamette’s student jazz musicians and vocalists, including the Willamette Singers and the Willamette Jazz Collective.
8-10 p.m.Open Mic Night at The Bistro
Putnam University Center, Willamette Bistro, 1st Floor
Stop by and enjoy a delicious dessert or specialty coffee along with some laid-back entertainment in the Bistro, Willamette’s student-run coffeehouse.
9:30 pm.–midnightBest Buy Willamette College Night
Best Buy, 3801 Center Street Northeast
A special night just for college students and their families. There will be special deals for this night only, along with a lot of free giveaways. Buses start leaving campus from Hatfield Fountain at 9:15 p.m.
10–11:30 p.m.Guess the Straight Person
Putnam University Center, Willamette Bistro, 1st Floor
In honor of National Coming-Out Day, October 11, Angles (Willamette’s Gay-Straight Alliance) presents their most popular event, “Guess the Straight Person.”  A panel of 10–15 self-identified gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and/or transgendered students answer questions from the audience to break down apparent stereotypes. At the end, the audience is asked to distinguish which member(s) of the panel is/are actually straight. Everyone on campus is invited.
11:30 p.m.-1 a.m.Midnight with the Bearcats
Cone Field House, Sparks Center
Celebrate the opening of Men’s and Women’s Basketball season with Head Coaches Kip Ioane and Anne Lapray as they debut the 2011–12 teams. Throughout the night fans will be incorporated into activities such as eating contests, relays, shooting games and much more!
Saturday, October 15
8 a.m.-noonHead of the Willamette Regatta Open House and Alumni Race
Salem Yacht and Boating Club
Bring the whole family to cheer on Bearcat Crew from the sandy beach of the Willamette River. Awards presentation and boat dedication at 11:30 a.m.
9 a.m.-2 p.m.Mini University Sessions
Get a taste of the academic life at Willamette by attending your choice from 15 sessions taught by professors from a variety of departments. Sessions begin at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Experience the joy of learning at sessions like “There’s No Such Thing as Moral Responsibility,” “Drug Design: Putting Together a Puzzle without a Picture” and “A Conversation Between Poems.”

From 1-4 p.m., Native American artists from Oregon tribes will be demonstrating their artistry in the lobby and galleries of the Hallie Ford Museum of Art. The weekend of October 14–15 marks the grand re-opening of the Confederated Tribes of the Grand Ronde Gallery, which houses the Hallie Ford Museum of Art’s permanent collection of Native American art. Enjoy outstanding musical performances by Willamette’s talented students. The concert will feature the Wind Ensemble, Chamber Choir, Voce Feminile (Women’s Choir), Male Ensemble Willamette, and University Chamber Orchestra.
Sunday, October 16
9:30-10:30 a.m.Interdenominational Worship Service
Cone Chapel, Waller Hall, 2nd Floor
This service will be led by University Chaplain Charlie Wallace and Associate Chaplain Karen Wood and will feature student readers. While open to all, the approach is “progressive Christian” —  in line with Willamette’s heritage and in tune with current spiritual, social and political perspectives.
11 a.m.Guided Tour of Sorority Houses
Putnam University Center, 1st Floor
A member of Panhellenic Council will lead a tour through all three sorority chapter houses and answer questions about sorority life at Willamette. This is an opportunity to talk first hand with sorority women about living in a chapter house and what it is like to be a member of a sorority at Willamette.
