Off-Campus Living

Residency Requirement

All freshmen and sophomores are required to live on campus unless they are married, over the age of 21, have dependent family under their care (child or parent) or are living with parent(s)/legal guardian(s) within a commutable distance of 25 miles or less.

Graduate Apartments on Campus

Because the majority of the University's 2,400 students are undergraduates who live on campus, a separate off-campus housing office does not exist. When undergraduate apartments are not at capacity, a limited number of units at the University Apartments and Haseldorf Apartments may be offered to graduate students. The character of our city is an interesting blend of influences. Salem is Oregon's capital city and has the state's second-largest population. Yet, within a matter of 20 minutes you can go from the downtown shopping area to rolling acres of vineyards west of the Willamette River. Salem is also about an hour's drive from the Cascade Mountains, the Oregon Coast and the city of Portland. You will have a wide choice of activities.

Information for Those Moving or Living Off Campus

Moving off campus can be an exciting yet stressful time. These documents were produced to help answer some of the questions you may have about living off campus. There may also be some other resources out there that you may not know of in Salem! (All are in Adobe PDF format and can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader, a free utility available here.)

A Word on International Students

Unlike U.S. students, international students do not have absolute freedom since the U.S. government requires an international student to fulfill certain requirements to maintain a student status. In general, these requirements are not a burden for students. However, these rules can seem severe when students get into trouble. [Continue reading "International Students" ]
