In Your Residence
- Do not let strangers into the building, even if they say they are students.
- If a stranger who looks �wrong� is in your residence, call Campus Safety. How to recognize "wrong":
- The person is wandering around testing doors or windows.
- The person abruptly stops or alters their direction of travel when they realize that you are watching them.
- The person gives an excuse for their presence that doesn't make sense.
- The person states that they are visiting a friend, but they don't know the friend's name or room number.
- The person is waiting to be let in because the "lost their key," but they don't know the name of the building or what a Compass Card is.
- You live in the building but you have never seen this individual before.
- The person appears to be hiding from someone or something.
- The person has a bundle of items and they tell you that they are moving in or out, but it is not the normal move in/out time of year.
- The person picks up an item left by someone else.
- The person is attempting to sell something, or solicit funds.
- The person just doesn't appear to belong in the residence, but you can't define why you feel that way.
- Never loan your keys or I.D. card to anyone. *
- Lock your door while you are inside sleeping or when you leave the room.
- Never prop open locked doors. *
- Door messages or voice mail should not say when you will return.
- If you must keep large sums of money, jewelry or valuable items in your room, consider purchasing a small safe from the Residential Services Office. During breaks and vacations, remove the items from your room.

When Walking
- Do not walk alone at night. Safety escorts are available on campus and up to two blocks off campus during all hours of darkness.
- Know where emergency telephones are along your route.
- Pay attention to your surroundings. Walk briskly.
- Have your key ready before getting to the door.
- Visually check inside, around and under your car before getting in. Then lock all doors and roll up windows.

Your Property
Theft is the most common crime on campus. Prevent theft by reducing or removing the opportunity.
- Lock your door and windows whenever you leave, even if it's �just for a minute.�
- Never prop open locked doors. *
- Do not leave backpacks, purses, laptops or briefcases unattended, even in cubbies or carrels provided by the University.
- In offices, store purses or backpacks in a file cabinet or drawer and LOCK IT.
- Record serial numbers and descriptions of your valuables.
- Engrave personal property with your driver's license number. Engraving pens are available for use at the Campus Safety office.

Bicycles
- Use a �U-shaped� lock, not a cable lock. Available at The Willamette Store.
- Lock the wheel and the frame to the rack.
- Immediately report suspicious persons around bike racks.
- Register your bicycle with Campus Safety at no charge. If a suspicious person with a bicycle is stopped on campus, Campus Safety can quickly determine the owner of a registered bicycle: It is difficult to prove that an unregistered bicycle is stolen. If a stolen bicycle is subsequently recovered, it can be easily returned to the registered owner.
- Bicycles may park only in designated bicycle racks. Bicycles locked to railings or parked in hallways are subject to removal.

Cars, Trucks, Motorcycles
- Always lock your vehicle.
- At night, park in well-lighted, high-traffic areas.
- Never leave valuable items visible in your car.
- If you have valuable audio equipment, consider installing an alarm system or removing the equipment.
- Register mopeds and motorcycles with Campus Safety at no charge.
