Programs for Funding Undergraduate/Graduate Study in Environmental Sciences


Anchor Environmental
 
An environmental science and engineering consulting firm whose expertise and focus is in aquatic-based remediation and waterfront development projects. Individual scholarship awards will range in value from $500 to $5,000 and be provided to the recipient's institution of higher learning to be disbursed to the student for graduate school tuition and supplies. Applicants must be full-time graduate students or persons accepted to an United States graduate school; have an undergraduate GPA equivalent of B average or higher: and be majoring in: fisheries; environmental sciences; planning/land use; landscape architecture; or coastal, geotechnical or environmental engineering (any of which has an aquatic/waterfront emphasis).

Annie's Homegrown, Inc., Environmental Studies Scholarship
The program assists undergraduate or graduate students who are environmental advocates and are focusing on classes in environmental studies. The program gives 25 awards annually of $1000 each. This money can be used for tuition, books, and other educational expenses. Annie's accepts applications postmarked between February 1st and July 1st. Final decisions will be made by December.

Brower Youth Awards
The Earth Island Institute offers six awards annually, to assist with educational costs or to further the applicant's environmental work. The award includes $3000 cash. Application deadline is April 15th.

Brown and Caldwell
A California environmental engineering firm that provides annual scholarships for students pursuing careers in environmental services.

Budweiser Conservation Scholarship
This program supports and promotes innovative research or study that seeks to respond to today’s most pressing conservation issues.A minimum of ten scholarships of up to $10,000 each will be awarded to cover students’ expenses for tuition, fees, books, room and board and other direct expenses related to their studies. Awards will be made based on merit and will take into consideration the student’s academic achievements and their ability and commitment to develop innovative solutions that are designed to address real and pressing issues affecting fish, wildlife and plant conservation efforts.

Canon National Parks Science Scholars Program
This is a collaboration among Canon U.S.A., Inc., the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the US National Park Service. Thanks to a generous commitment by Canon U.S.A., Inc., the program will be awarding eight US $80,000 scholarships to Ph.D. students throughout the Americas to conduct research critical to conserving the national parks of the region.Research projects in the biological, physical, social and cultural sciences are eligible, as well as projects in a new category — technology innovation in support of conservation science.

Catherine H. Beattie Fellowship for Conservation Horticulture
The Garden Club of America (GCA) and the Center for Plant Conservation (CPC) administer the grant, which enables a graduate student in biology, horticulture, or a related field to conduct research on a rare or endangered U.S. plant. Preference is given to students focusing on the endangered flora of the Carolinas or the southeastern United States. Fellowships may vary from $1,000 to $4,000, and will serve as compensation for work done by a graduate student, often at a botanical garden jointly serving CPC and that student's curricular studies.

Gloria Barron Wilderness Society Scholarship
The Wilderness Society offers $10,000 to a graduate student in natural resources management, law or policy programs. The award is made in support of research and preparation of a paper on an aspect of wilderness establishment, protection, or management. The work may apply to a particular landscape or it may address issues broadly.

The Environmental Leadership Program  

The program seeks to transform public understanding of environmental issues by training and supporting a diverse network of visionary, action-oriented emerging leaders. The fellowship program annually selects approximately twenty individuals with demonstrated talent and potential to participate in a two-year leadership development fellowship. The ELP Fellowship combines a strong peer network and intensive skills training with opportunities for mentoring, project seed money, time for personal and professional reflection, and technical support. ELP Fellows have access to an internal Activity Fund that allows them to pursue capacity building projects to develop leadership skills and accomplish tangible results. Application materials for the ELP fellowship are available each year beginning in June with an application deadline of October 1st.

Environmental Research and Education Foundation
This scholarship recognizes excellence in Ph.D. or post-doctoral environmental research and education in waste management education.

Exploration Fund of the Explorers Club
$1,200 grants in support of exploration and field research. Funds given primarily to graduate students.

Garden Club of America Scholarships
The purpose of The Garden Club of America is to stimulate the knowledge and love of gardening, to share the advantages of association by means of educational meetings, conferences, correspondence and publications, and to restore, improve, and protect the quality of the environment through educational programs and action in the fields of conservation and civic improvement. There are a variety of fellowships and scholarships available.There are a variety of fellowships and scholarships available to support work in environmental studies, botany, landscape architecture, and other fields.

Green Corps
A yearlong full time, paid Environmental Leadership Training Program. Thirty recent college graduates interested in organizing and advocacy careers. Deadlines vary by region, starting January 20th.

Morris K. Udall Foundation Scholarships

National Institutes of Health, Undergraduate Scholarships
The program offers scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are committed to careers in biomedical, behavioral, and social science health-related research. The scholarships include up to $20,000 annually in support for tuition, educational expenses, a stipend for living expenses; paid research training at the NIH during the summer; and paid training and employment at the NIH after graduation. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, full-time students at accredited institutions, from a disadvantaged background (be certified by financial aid office as having "exceptional financial need"), and have gpa of at least 3.5 or within top five percent of the class. Application deadline is usually late February.

The National Wildlife Foundation's Campus Ecology Program
The program offers funds and other support for undergraduate and graduate students to pursue projects related to ecological sustainability on their campuses and in their communities. Grants of up to $1200 are intended to serve as seed money for projects in areas like alternative stormwater management, natural wastewater treatment, and communal composting.

NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship Program
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) scholarship program is designed (1) to increase undergraduate training in oceanic and atmospheric science, research, technology, and education and foster multidisciplinary training opportunities; (2) to increase public understanding and support for stewardship of the ocean and atmosphere and improve environmental literacy; (3) to recruit and prepare students for public service careers with NOAA and other natural resource and science agencies at the Federal, state and local levels of government; and (4) to recruit and prepare students for careers as teachers and educators in oceanic and atmospheric science and to improve scientific and environmental education in the United States.

The Hollings Scholarship Program will provide awards that include academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000 per year) for full-time study during the 9-month academic year; a 10-week, full-time internship position ($650/week) during the summer at a NOAA facility; and, if reappointed, academic assistance (up to a maximum of $8,000) for full-time study during a second 9-month academic year.

Oak Ridge National Laboratories' Institute for Science and Education
The website lists research and internship programs for undergraduate and graduate students in math, sciences, and engineering. Some include funds for tuition and fees.

Richard A. Herbert Memorial Educational Fund (American Water Resources Association)
The American Water Resources Association administers the fund, which offers one $2,000 scholarship annually to a full-time undergraduate student working toward his/her first undergraduate degree and who is enrolled in a program related to water resources; and one $2,000 scholarship annually to a full-time graduate student enrolled in a program relating to water resources. Each applicant must be a national AWRA member.

Seaspace Scholarships
Supports marine-related courses of study for undergraduate students entering their junior or senior years and graduate students with an overall GPA of at least 3.3/4.0 and demonstrating financial need. Deadline: February.

The Surfrider Foundation's Thomas Pratte Memorial Scholarship
As a demonstration of the Surfrider Foundation's continuing commitment to education, its Board of Directors has extended the guidelines and scope of the Surfrider Foundation's Thomas Pratte Memorial Scholarship program and allocated $10,000 in funds to be made available to grantees enrolled in an accredited college or university in the U.S. or Puerto Rico for the academic year of 2006-2007. Awards may be made at the undergraduate, Masters and Ph.D. levels, and are now available to qualified applicants pursuing studies in a wide range of fields deemed compatible and consistent with the Surfrider Foundation's Mission Statement and Guiding Principles. Application deadline is March 15th.

The United States Society of Dams
The society annually awards a scholarship of $10,000 to a USSD student member whose graduate-level research studies have a potential for developing practical solutions to design and construction problems and other dam-related issues. Applicants must be U.S. citizens enrolled in U.S. academic institutions that have programs related to dams.

The USDA National Scholars Program
The program is a major effort of the United States Department of Agriculture and the eighteen 1890 Historically Black Land-Grant Institutions, to award scholarships to students to attend one of the eighteen universities and study agriculture, food, or natural resource sciences. Application deadline is January 15th of each calendar year.

The Ventures in Education Program
This program coordinates opportunities for underrepresented minorities in foundations and organizations, in the biological and agricultural sciences.

The Windstar Foundation  
The foundation is awarding two $500 scholarships for qualified undergraduates entering their junior or senior year of college, as well as one $1000 scholarship for graduate students entering their second year of graduate school. The applicant must be a U.S. student enrolled in an accredited U.S. college or university Environmental Studies or Environmental Engineering Program. Undergraduates must be entering their junior or senior year of college; graduate students must be entering their second year of graduate school. Applicants must have a college GPA of 3.0 or better in his or her major field. Applications must be postmarked no later than June 1.
