The Chronicle
of Higher Education David W. Miller Award for Student Journalists
-
The Chronicle seeks to pay tribute to Mr. Miller, a former staff writer,
and to identify and nurture future generations of student journalists
who are as interested in big ideas and excellent writing as he was.
The award consists of a $2,500 prize and a certificate, and is presented
annually. The deadline for submissions s usually the end of June, and
the winner will be announced in the fall. Candidates may apply for the
award by submitting up to three samples of published work accompanied
by a one-page letter describing the articles and why they were chosen
for submission. The samples of published work must have appeared in
a campus publication during the previous academic year. Opinion essays,
personal columns, scholarly or research papers, and articles that present
the author's own research findings are ineligible. Candidates for the
award must have been undergraduate students at the time their articles
were published. Applicants may be students in any country, but their
submissions must be in English.
NPR Kroc Fellowships
-
The NPR Kroc Fellowship was established to identify and develop a new
generation of extraordinary journalists for the public radio system.
NPR is looking for a diverse pool of applicants who aspire to work in
public radio. Candidates must be just completing college or graduate
school, or be out of school for one year or less as of December 31.
They do not need journalism or radio experience, but must demonstrate
exceptional potential and drive. Three Kroc Fellows will be accepted
into the program this year. The Fellowship begins in August, and lasts
one year. It includes a stipend of more than $37,000, plus benefits,
which include paid vacation. Fellows will get rigorous, hands-on training
in every aspect of public radio journalism - writing, reporting, producing
and editing, for both radio and the Web. Kroc Fellows will work primarily
at NPR headquarters in Washington D.C., though each Fellowship will
include an assignment to an NPR member station.
