What is Saturday Explorations?

Saturday Explorations is for students in grades 5-8 with an interest in science and math, arts and humanities, or language and culture. Five Saturday morning classes two-hours in length for creative, curious and talented 5th to 8th grade students who would like to spend time with similar youth learning about a specific topic.  Classes are kept small, usually a maximum of ten students per instructor. 

Fall 2013 course selections are:

• Creative Writing: Do you love to write? This class will help you choose powerful words, tell bold and color-filled stories and communicate your ideas via words and illustrations.
• Science Rotation: Different lab-based science units each week!  Topics in Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Neuroscience, Environmental Science and Forensics are explored. All classes include hands-on activities taught by enthusiastic Willamette University under-graduates who love science. Students are grouped by grade.
• Spanish: Study Spanish-speaking cultures, their similarities and differences, while learning Spanish language, songs, dances, and history. 
• Web Design: Learn the Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver software platforms.  Create your own ready-to-publish web page.  
• Music Technology: Use state-of-the art computer equipment in Willamette University's recording studio to create concertos, analyze existing music and compose and publish your own music. Young adult musicians and music majors teach with supervision from a Willamette University professor.
• Beginning Robotics: Use the LEGO Mindstorms system to learn robotic programming. Design, build and program a robot to race, 'sumo' wrestle and play a song you compose.
