Saturday Explorations
Who can sign up?
Students in grades 5-8 with an aptitude or interest in science and math, arts and humanities, or language and culture.
What is the program?
The program consists of various activities that are specially prepared for each age group. Students choose one course for the five-week term. Classes are kept small, usually a maximum of ten students per instructor.
Spring 2013 course selections are:
Creative Writing
Use fun writing prompts and new illustration techniques to begin writing your own book. Taught by just published author and illustrator.
Science Rotation
A different area of science each week. Topics in Chemistry, Biology, Neuroscience, Environmental Science or Epidemiology are explored through fun advanced labs. All classes include hands-on activities and labs. Students are grouped by grade.
Japanese
Beginning and advanced Japanese
Drama
Try out different acting techniques in an action packed "Whose Line is it Anyway?"style acting class.
Music Technology
Use state-of-the art computer equipment to create and publish your own music
Robotics
Use the LEGO Mindstorms system to learn robotic programming. You will learn to engineer the robot you build to run fun challenges, like races, mazes and "sumo" wrestling! Advanced Robotics is designed for students who have taken Beginning Robotics or have significant previous Mindstorms experience.
Where is it held?
In the Collins and Olin Science Centers on the Willamette University Campus in Salem.
When is it held?
The next program will start February 2, 2013 and run until March 2, 2013. The sessions are held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.
