Saturday Explorations

Who can sign up?

Students in grades 5-8 with an aptitude or interest in science and math, arts and humanities, or language and culture.

What is the program?

The program consists of various activities that are specially prepared for each age group. Students choose one course for the five-week term. Classes are kept small, usually a maximum of ten students per instructor.

Winter 2012 course selections are:

Science Rotation

A different area of science each week. Topics in Chemistry, Biology, Anatomy, Environmental Science or Physics are explored through fun advanced labs. All classes include hands-on activities and labs. Students are grouped by grade.


Japanese

Beginning and advanced Japanese


French or Spanish

Beginning Spanish or French language and culture


Music Technology

Use state-of-the art computer equipment to create and publish your own music


Robotics

Use the LEGO Mindstorms system to learn robotic programming. You will learn to engineer the robot you build to run fun challenges, like races, mazes and "sumo" wrestling!


Where is it held?

In the Collins and Olin Science Centers on the Willamette University Campus in Salem.

When is it held?

The next program will start on February 4 and run for five Saturdays (February 4, 11, 18, 25 and March 3) The sessions are held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.
