Saturday Explorations Program Information
Who can sign up?
Students in grades 5-8 with an aptitude or interest in science and
math, arts and humanities, or language and culture.
What is the program?
The program consists of various activities that are specially
prepared for each age group. Students choose one course for the
five-week term. Classes are kept small, usually a maximum of ten
students per instructor. Winter 2008 course selections are as follows:
- Math/Science Rotation
- A different area of science or math each week. Chemistry,
Biology, Entomology, Math and Physics are explored through fun advanced
labs. All classes
include hands-on activities and labs. Students are grouped by grade.
- Japanese
- Beginning and advanced Japanese
- French
- Beginning French language and culture
- Chinese
- Beginning Chinese language and culture
- Literature Studies
- Study Harry Potter books as literature
- Water Ecology
- Learn about all the factors influencing the quality of our local
streams. Test local streams with advanced lab equipment.
- Exercise Science
- Study various ways scientists measure the way your body moves.
All hands-on, lab based experiments using state of the art equipment..
- Figure Drawing
- Learn how to draw people with pencil, pastel and paint.
- Robotics
- Use the LEGO Mindstorms system to learn robotic programming.
Where is it held?
In the Collins and Olin Science Centers on the Willamette University
Campus in Salem.
When is it held?
The next program will start on February 2 and run for five weeks
(February 2, 9, 16, 23 and March 1). The sessions are held on
Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.
How much does the program cost?
The $50 program cost covers all five sessions and all materials.
