Saturday Explorations

Who can sign up?

Students in grades 5-8 with an aptitude or interest in science and math, arts and humanities, or language and culture.

What is the program?

The program consists of various activities that are specially prepared for each age group. Students choose one course for the five-week term. Classes are kept small, usually a maximum of ten students per instructor. Winter 2010 course selections are as follows:

Science Rotation
A different area of science each week. Topics in Chemistry, Biology, Entomology, Ornithology or Physics are explored through fun advanced labs. All classes include hands-on activities and labs. Students are grouped by grade.
Japanese
Beginning and advanced Japanese
French
Beginning French language and culture
Chinese
Beginning Chinese language and culture
Literature Studies
Study Harry Potter books as literature
Exercise Science
Study various ways scientists measure the way your body moves. All hands-on, lab based experiments using state of the art equipment.
Robotics
Use the LEGO Mindstorms system to learn robotic programming.

In the Collins and Olin Science Centers on the Willamette University Campus in Salem.

When is it held?

The next program will start on February 6 and run for five Saturdays. The sessions are held on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon.

How much does the program cost?

The $50 program cost covers all five sessions and all materials.
