Carbon Offsets
We need your help in order to fulfill the air travel green initiative!
At Willamette, sustainability is not a fad. In fact, Willamette has been on the cutting edge of social and environmental sustainability for decades— it is part and parcel of who we are as an institution, and community dedicated to fulfilling our motto, "not unto ourselves alone are we born."
In the nation’s largest survey to date, the National Wildlife Federation recognized Willamette University as first in the nation for sustainability activities.
Following the same path, The Travel Center at Willamette University did not want to stay behind. Especially since air travel is estimated to contribute about 11% of the carbon emissions caused by transportation. Thanks to a Grant received from Willamette’s Sustainability Council; the Travel Center established a project that created the possibility of having environmental sustainable air travel through a partnership with Carbonfund.org. Faculty, Staff and Students, now have the opportunity to offset their carbon emissions when they travel by air. Our commitment is to match Willamette’s Community contribution.
Flying?
Use Carbonfund.org’s calculator to calculate and offset the CO2 emissions emitted flying to and from Willamette University. Be sure to check the radiative forcing box to fully offset your footprint. Enter the first few letters of the city or the 3-digit airport code, and the calculator will provide you with available choices. Distances shown are round trip.
Prefer to pay with your Willamette travel account? Please calculate your flight’s footprint and email that calculation, offset cost and your name to travel@willamette.edu At the end of the month we will offset your footprint and send you a summary of the tons you’ve offset.
Please visit Willamette University Sustainability website at http://www.willamette.edu/about/sustainability/ for more information on other green commencement initiatives. To learn more about the program, visit http://www.carbonfund.org/site/pages/land/willamette_2009.
