Director’s Welcome

Updated December 17, 2008

28th Annual Willamette University Jazz Festival Participants:

We look forward to having you join us for our 28th annual Jazz Festival. We are eager to have your students share in music making and the evening performance of the Willamette University Jazz Ensemble with internationally renown jazz trombonist, Andy Martin. The goal of our Festival remains to provide a fun and challenging educational experience for you and your bands.  To that end, Andy will be giving a Master Class for all participating bands/students in Smith Auditorium at Noon and he will be performing on the evening concert with the Judges' Choice Band(s).

Our website has all of the information you will need for the day, including maps and directions and ticket information for the evening festival concert at 7:30 p.m. The schedule of events will be emailed to each director individually; however, performance times will be posted online. Please note that the Soloist and Setup Form must be completed online, copied, and brought to registration.

We will have five outstanding adjudicators for the day's events. Providing written and taped comments will beRich Inouye from Clark College, Tom Wakeling from Clackamas Community College and Paul Mazzio, freelance trumpeter. Giving your band a clinic session in our beautiful Rogers Rehearsal Hall will be renown jazz drummer Alan Jones or writer/director David Mills.

All bands need to check in at Festival Headquarters (Rogers Music Center 103) as soon as they arrive. At Festival Headquarters, you will meet your Willamette student guide and will receive last-minute information and instructions. If you would be aided by meeting your guide elsewhere (such as the parking lot) or need further directions, please call headquarters at (503) 370-6255. Your Soloist and Setup Forms need to be turned in at check in; these are required to consider your student for a soloist recognition and award. At check-in, you will receive tickets for the evening concert. You can help us in this process by knowing approximately how many tickets your students will need that evening. It is my fondest wish that every student participant take advantage of my financial naivet' and utilize a free ticket to this exciting concert. You can however, help us avoid bankruptcy by encouraging parents and boosters to purchase tickets.

For non-performers, tickets are still available and can be purchased at festival headquarters. Prices are $12 for adults and $6 students and seniors. Tickets will also be available at the box office prior to the 7:30 p.m. concert.

Again, we look forward to Jazz Festival XXVIII and are glad to have you share in our celebration of jazz. I look forward to seeing you all at Willamette University on February 9.

Sincerely,

Prof. Stan Bock
Director, Willamette Jazz Festival
