STUDENT JOURNALS FROM THE TRIP

...Last night was
amazing! 3 groups we sang with were so spirited and excited
and expressive and they felt the music and moved with it. And
were so excited about our music...
Continuing from last night…Wow! After we finished, they
started singing a traditional recessional and they were dancing,
stomping, clapping, cheering. And even after we were outside
we continued to celebrate and dance and clap with the drums.
We were all just feeling the music and letting it move our bodies,
unrestricted and indifferent of the usual social constraints.

City bus of Joburg and the apartheid
museum. What an incredible experience! I can hardly believe
the sights and sounds and feelings there today. Pictures will
do no justice. After we drove through town we went to Soweto
(South Western Township). The largest township in S. Africa.
Lunch at Wendai’s (Very good, ate tripe) and back to the
hotel. I am still adjusting to the time here. I was dubbed “SaMaBo”
today as my African nickname. We left at 5 pm to go to Rand
Afrikaans University where we listened to three Amazing choirs!
Their spirits and energies and movements were, to say the least,
inspiring! We sang last and performed Hope for Resolution yet
again. Somehow it is acquiring new meaning each time. Singing
the national anthem with them is so moving. I can’t count
