Community Impact

Along with the rest of Willamette University, our three graduate schools share the motto Not Unto Ourselves Alone are We Born.  Students and alumni from all our programs share in a spirit of community service and civic engagement as they pursue success personally and professionally.

Through specialized service learning programs, each school contributes to the local community and the greater field of study in which each operates.  This includes hands on participation in impact projects, experiential learning opportunities, collaborative research between faculty and students, and student-led service initiatives.

Opportunities for community service

Education

Students in the Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program complete field experience in the public schools.  Each student spends over 1,000 hours in the classroom as a student teacher. The Master of Education and Specialty Endorsements students also complete practicum hours in the schools.  In addition to field experience, our students serve as mentors, coaches and tutors in the public schools.

Law

Willamette’s Pro Bono Honors Program enables students to enhance their learning experience by participating in community-based legal service projects. Students gain valuable hands-on involvement in the community by volunteering with a government agency or with a public interest or nonprofit organization.

Management

The PACE (Practical Applications for Careers and Enterprises) program, Oregon Ethics in Business Awards and MBA for Professionals capstone project all pair management knowledge with hands on community service.  Over 5,000 hours of service are donated each year.
