Admission Information

MAT Admission Checklist

To apply for admission to the MAT program, applicants must submit all of the following:

  • A Completed MAT Application for Admission

    The application, including essays, accompanied by a $50 non-refundable application fee. (The $50 application fee is waived for applications submitted online.) Start an online application.
  • Two Letters of Recommendation

    Letters of recommendation are required for all applicants and should be completed by persons who have supervised the applicant while working with school-age children or youth. It is essential that all applicants obtain and show evidence of some experience, either volunteer or paid, with youth of an appropriate age before applying to this program. Experience through local schools, churches, the YWCA or YMCA, scouting groups or community centers is vital to the application process and evaluated carefully by the Admission Committee.
  • Official Undergraduate Transcript(s)

    An official transcript is required from each of the colleges previously attended. (A 3.0 cumulative grade point average is generally the minimum acceptable.) Transcripts for current and former Willamette University students will be automatically requested from the Office of the Registrar. However, the applicant should arrange to have the official transcript sent directly to the GSE Office of Admission if any additional colleges have been attended.  If the transcripts you submit for review are received before you earn your bachelor's degree, we will need a final, degree-posted transcript.
  • Evidence of Basic Skills Competency - Find out what tests you need to take.

    These test results are required by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) for the State of Oregon. In order to establish basic skills competency all applicants must successfully any of the following tests: NES- Essential Academic Skills (EAS),  California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) or the Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST).
  • Passing Scores on Subject Exams - Find out what tests you need to take.

    These test scores should be specific to the level and subject area of interest. Please visit the Oregon Educator Licensure Assessments (ORELA, for early childhood, elementary and middle-school teachers) and NES or Praxis II (for high-school and middle-school subjects) web sites to learn about and register for the appropriate subject examinations for your desired level of authorization. Only Praxis II tests taken before August 31, 2010 will be accepted.  Starting September 1, 2010, NES tests will be required for subject exams.  Subject exams are required before the start of the full-time program and before the start of the second year of the part-time program.
  • Code of Conduct/Criminal History Disclosure Forms

    These documents are required for admission to the program and placement in schools during your field experience (as required by the State of Oregon).  These forms are included in the online application for admission, or you can download the Code of Conduct form and Criminal History form in advance.
