EDM 581 Practitioner Inquiry 1 (3 credits)

The course introduces the concept of inquiry research as it relates to the historical tradition of action research and interpretive research and looks at both quantitative and qualitative approaches to such work. Teacher inquiry will be considered in relationship to other forms of research and emphasizes the role of educators as researchers of their own practices, experiences and contexts. Building off of the first semester courses, students will explore their classrooms as complex systems shaped by interpersonal, cultural, and political/structural dynamics. Participants build a framework as they begin to explore topics of interest for research projects conducted during year two. Various quantitative and qualitative data collection methods are introduced and practiced in order to gain insight into the educational setting.
