The Book Whisperer

You are invited to join a new OWP Book Group to read and discuss Donalyn Miller's stellar book on teaching reading,The Book Whisperer: Awakening the Inner Reader in Every Child.  This book study is open to the first twelve teachers who email Steve Jones to sign up.  Participants will be asked to purchase their own book (Amazon $12 plus shipping) and are welcome to invite colleagues to share this summer reading experience.  The study group will meet at Professor Karen Hamlin's house from 6-9 pm on Wednesday, August 3 to discuss the book and build a checklist for applying Miller's fine ideas in our classrooms. Directions to the gathering site will be emailed to registrants. 

Teaching and Writing Poetry

OWP Co-Director Steve Jones will lead EDU 640: Teaching and Writing Poetry, June 23-24 & 27-30. Class will run from 9am to 4pm daily. Participants will take a playful creative approach to reading and writing poetry, starting several new poems each morning & working in small revision and sharing groups in the afternoon. Each participant will draft and revise approximately 20 new poems and lay out and publish an individual chapbook. The cost of this course is $200. Students may also register for 4 quarter hours of graduate credit. Scholarships are available to cover the additional tuition cost of $800.  Please sign by emailing Steve Jones.
