Young Writers Camps

August 5 - 16, 2013

Grades 3 through 10

The students learn to explore writing styles; analyze model texts; be playful; and share their writing in a supportive, encouraging community of writers -- all while having a lot of fun!

The individual camps are:

Storytelling: Learning from the Best

(Grades 3-4 and Grades 5-6, two separate groups)

Studying popular writers gives young authors a sense of storytelling, vocabulary and a head start in creating their own stories. This camp will take an in-depth look at what makes writing great. Using art and the writing process, students will create colorful characters and challenging plots.

World of WordCraft: Boy Writers

(Grades 5-8, boys only)

This workshop will use a variety of writing tools and technology to enhance writing skills. To spark our imaginations and creativity with non-fiction writing, we will use the framework of popular science, animation, digital photography, robotics, solar cars and chemistry. Join us this year for a new and exciting adventure in writing!

Myth and Tales: Fantasy in Word and Art

(Grades 7-10)

From Greek mythology and fairy tales to modern day fantasy novels, stories of heroes and challenges are all around us. Using both words and art, this workshop will help writers learn how to design characters and plots to tell their tale, while strengthening overall writing skills.
