Special Message - Supporting the Future of the Willamette MBA

Dear Willamette MBA Community,

This past January, Willamette's MBA for Professionals celebrated a milestone achievement - more than 200 graduates in the program with a completion rate of over 96%.

With each commencement ceremony, we add a new cohort of graduates to an incredibly powerful network of Willamette MBA alumni in the Portland and Salem areas. As a member of the inaugural class, I'm proud of how the program has grown during the past six years.

I chose to get my MBA to better understand how the functional areas of management - marketing, human resources, operations, economics and finance - all work together to create sound business strategy. This knowledge has made me a better manager of my own business and a better professional in all aspects of my career.

The added benefit of a Willamette MBA is the sense of community not found in any other MBA program. Earning your MBA in the evening makes for a very daunting challenge - balancing a career, a family and many other competing priorities. When I started the MBA, I was a new father of twins and in the midst of growing my business. The supportive nature of the Willamette experience, especially through my fellow students, made all the difference. As the first cohort, we embodied Willamette's pioneering spirit by taking a risk on a new program in a brand new location.

When I stepped back into the classroom for the first time in 10 years, I did not know what to expect. What I found was a room full of bright, experienced and dedicated people, all of whom I still consider to be friends today. New families formed, new businesses began and job opportunities presented themselves, advancing each of us in different, but very positive, directions.

Sustaining the continued growth of the program requires the support of all of us. As a fellow MBA for Professionals graduate, I ask you to consider the impact your Willamette MBA made on your career. Please join me in giving back to the MBA for Professionals program through an online contribution. Our support makes an immediate impact through the addition of new faculty, improvements in technology, upgrading of the program's facilities and programming for alumni.

Cinedigm Digital Cinema acquired New Video Group for $20 million, where Nathan Love '05, MBA'06 has worked in digital entertainment for the last year after leaving Lionsgate. This deal makes Cinedigm (CIDM) a home entertainment distributor, as part of its move to become a new full service studio. Cinedigm, headed by CEO Chris McGurk, said the deal builds on its existing relationship with New Video. The joint venture has acquired "The Invisible War" and "Citadel," scheduled for release in June and September respectively. It also acquired "In Our Nature."
On January 26th, Kristine McClain MBA'81 transitioned from living as a male (Paul McClain) to living as a female. She works at Bonneville Power Administration in the Rates Group. Kris has taken a long journey to become the person she knew she was at a very young age. Kris volunteers at a Local Youth Center called Sexual Minority Youth Recreation Center (SMYRC) helping youth understand that are discovering they are LGBT. Kris is also becoming active in the GLOBE, the Federal Governments LGBT resource group. 
Pradeep Kathi MM'91 has been conferred with the Doctor of Philosophy in Policy, Planning and Development degree from the Sol Price School of Policy Planning and Development, University of Southern California. The conferral date is May 11, 2012 at the Commencement/Convocation. The USC Sol Price School of Public Policy has moved up to No. 6 (from No. 7) in the just-released 2013 U.S. News & World Report rankings of "America's Best Graduate Schools" for public affairs
Anita Hughes MM'99 took the position of MBA Program Manager/Assessment Officer at the University of Alaska Fairbanks in January 2012. The new position is a split position between everything administrative to support a growing MBA program and all School of Management Assurance of Learning documentation.
Writes Anita, "Love working with students again and setting up processes that support them. I'm advising, creating all the necessary forms, building a database and getting to know our 80 or so students." When not at school, Anita and her partner are discovering Alaska: "We've been to Denali National Park, the International Ice Carving Festival, the beginning of the Yukon Quest 1000 mile dogsled race, the Solstice festival, hiking at midnight in the sun, down to Whittier on the SW coast." Kristy Bolsinger MBA'09 and her family have formed a team for the Relay For Life to raise money. The inspiration for joining the cause is a result of Kristy's cousin's recent battle with breast cancer and her mother's. Read the full story here.

For family and friends of graduates who are not able to travel to Salem for the May 13th, 2012 Hooding and Commencement ceremony, a live stream of the event will be available here.

Atkinson Alumna Named Portland Business Journalís Women Executive of the Year

Katherine Durant MBA'90, founder of Atlas Investments, LLC, was named the Women Executive of the Year in the annual Portland Business Journal "Women of Influence" special section.  Katherine received her award during the program's annual luncheon on April 26. 

Fellow Willamette CLA alumna Linda Wilhelms Navarro '90, CEO of the Oregon Banker's Association, received an Orchid Award at the luncheon as one of the 25 outstanding businesswomen of the year. 

The Willamette MBA table was hosted by Dean Debra Ringold and Denise Callahan '95, MBA'00, Interim Vice President for Development and Alumni Relations.  They were joined by 9 other fellow Willamette MBA alumni.

Update from the Career Management Team: Beth Ursin & Shelby Gould
May is the busiest of months as we anticipate graduation and the end of the 2011-2012 school year. Congratulations to all 2012 graduates! We wish you much success as you embark on your new careers.  

As we watch you take your next step, we hope you will continue to stay in touch with us as Alumni and partner with us to mentor and serve the students who are coming up behind you.  We thank also all of the alumni, employers, volunteers and mentors who gave of their time to bring company information to campus, help with networking events, provide recruitment opportunities and mentor our students for their success.  Without you we cannot provide the Career Management services that has made the Willamette MBA stand out.

Employers on Campus
We had 4 employers on campus this month. Avanade spent the day with us interviewing students. Raution Jaiswal MBA'09 from YF(X) Consulting came to interview several students for his new business. Students came to hear Adidas Merchandise Manager LaToya Kamara talk about Adidas and her experience working for them as an intern up to a managerial role. The Central Intelligence Agency is looking to hire MBA students and came to talk about clandestine opportunities. The event was well attended.

Workshops on Campus
Anthony Jones '02, MBA'05, Senior Manager of Insights and Analytics at Waggener Edstrom, talked about current methods and tools in social media. He discussed the data, application, and ROI of the tools/methods. Students discovered how this knowledge could be applied in their career, as well as personal branding.

AKT's Bonnie Cook, who is an expert in Microsoft Suite, joined by her colleague, Jason Fieman JD/MBA'09, came to provide the basics of Visio 101.  This training and workshop provided recent graduates the opportunity to learn the basics of Visio.  Visio is commonly used, especially at consulting firms.

A representative of Kinetics came to the APMA Excel Event, presented information about Excel.

Willamette MBA Peace Corps Coverdell Fellows, Anne Fraser, Casey Morgan, Katie Skaar, and Collin Thibodeau, presented at a special all-campus event about their experiences in the Peace Corps.  They shared stories and photos from their time in Peace Corps service.

Job Fairs: The Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN) hosted an internship fair for students. The companies participating were start-up companies seeking summer interns. This event was open to current students who registered in advance. Students were required to submit a cover letter explaining their objectives in pursuing an internship and a one page resume when they registered. Similar to speed dating, this event featured 14 companies looking for interns. Each student was given at least 10 minutes to meet with a prospective employer. After the event, students were able to follow up with the companies that best fit their future career aspirations. We are excited to report that a few of our students were able to secure summer internships from this event!

Atkinson Leadership Changes: We want to thank all of the 2nd year students that took on leadership roles for the 2011-2012 school year. Leadership at Atkinson is critical to the success of our students and as student volunteers we could not be as successful as we are without you. You will be missed! Career Management hosted a leadership retreat for all MBA student leaders involved in the 14 different student associations. The event was for all new board members and students who want to get involved in the 2012-2013 school year. Beth Ursin hosted the event in Lake Oswego at her home. Career Management also hosted an end of the year recognition event for all mentors and their mentees. The event was held in the transformed student lounge, where mentors and mentees were able to share their experiences, enjoy appetizers and socialize together. All mentors were presented with a thank you gift for volunteer to spend time with students to help broaden their experiences in the business world.

Professor Henry Bi is pleased to share that his daughter, Kathy Jiaxin Bi, was born on Sunday, April 29th. "Mom and baby are both home now and doing great," says Henry. " Alex, 4, is also excited, but realizes that his little sister will play with him not very soon."



Professor Lisbeth Claus published a series of five regional (Europe,Sub-Saharan Africa, Australasia and Oceania and Asia) and two country (Germany, Switzerland) reports on employer duty of care. These special reports, based on her comprehensive Duty of Care and Travel Risk Management Global Benchmarking Study, were published by International SOS.

On April 22, Lauren Seabury, Marketing Specialist at International SOS Americas Region, hosted a training Webinar on "Managing Webinars" for the MBA students of Professor Claus' Advanced Global HR Experiential HR. Students were signed in as panelists and learned the before, during and after phases of planning and executing a successful webinar for a worldwide audience.

HR Class Presents to Boeing Management

On April 1, a team of MBA students (class of 2012) of the Global HR experiential class presented their semester-long consulting project to the HR management of Boeing 737 in Renton, WA. After the presentation and lunch hosted by Boeing, they took a VIP tour of the assembly facility of the Boeing 737.
