STATESMAN JOURNAL: What does a dean do at the Atkinson School?

DEBRA RINGOLD: ... Deans are formally the chief executive of a school or a college. In this case, it's the Atkinson Graduate School of Management. And in an academic setting, that person is also the chief academic officer. So I'm responsible for day-to-day operations -- not directly, but the buck stops with me.

I'm responsible for the financial well-being of the institution. And I'm responsible for quality in our faculty, activities and all of the student experiences that we offer.

So I have the same kinds of responsibilities that any CEO would have of an operating unit, but I also have the responsibility to ensure highest academic standards are being met by everyone that participates in the enterprise.
