Former Willamette Runner Wins Championship

Nick Symmonds '06 held off another top competitor in the final 50 meters to win the 800-meter race on Sunday in the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

The win at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., means Symmonds will head to the IAAF World Championships this summer in Berlin.

Symmonds, who won seven NCAA Division III individual national championships while majoring in biochemistry at Willamette, competed on the U.S. Olympic team in Beijing last summer. He grabbed the world's attention during the 800-meter final at the 2008 U.S. Olympic trials, where he and fellow Eugene-based runners Andrew Wheating and Christian Smith finished 1-2-3 in a thrilling race that some have called "the single most exciting moment in track and field."
