Willamette students volunteer at Bush Elementary School’s Tiger Club, which uses a curriculum designed to help children catch up to district and state standards in math, science, reading and writing.

Willamette students spent almost 1,400 hours volunteering at Bush Elementary in 2008–09.

Twenty Willamette students each semester tutor 150 students per week at Chemawa Indian School.

A partnership with Chemawa Indian School allows the Chemawa and Willamette students to learn about each other’s cultures.

Through the Language in Motion program, Willamette’s international students and study abroad returnees share culture lessons with local schoolchildren.

Willamette students mentor and tutor students at Willamette Academy, a college-access program for underrepresented youths.

In addition to tutoring, Willamette Academy provides supplemental academic programs to help students graduate from high school and become first in their families to attend college.

Many first-year students participate in New Student Orientation to Community Outreach, a five-day orientation program. Activities have included reading with children at the Colonia Libertad farmworker housing development.

Willamette students serve in communities across the country during spring and winter breaks as part of the Take a Break service program. For one trip, students learned about sustainable agriculture by working on Willamette Valley farms.
