Nearly 300 alumni attend 'Seven Cities'

In major U.S. cities on Oct. 17, critical masses of Bearcats convened concurrently for mini-reunions. Alumni shared updates, kindled memories and expanded networks while enjoying good food and drink during “Seven Cities, One Night.”

This year’s “Seven Cities” event took place in Portland, Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Honolulu, New York and Washington, D.C. Each of these areas is home to large numbers of Willamette alumni. Other cities that have hosted gatherings in the event’s three-year history include Denver and Boise.

The age ranges among the nearly 300 alumni was expansive; graduates from the 1960s through 2011 attended.

“It’s always a pleasant surprise to see how many eager and friendly alumni there are throughout the country,” says Director of Reunion and Alumni Events Amy Erekson Varga ‘97. “Our job is easy once we make the arrangements — alumni start reconnecting and helping each other immediately. Consciously or unconsciously, they’re showing us how the university motto, ‘Not unto ourselves alone are we born,’ really works.”

The events aren’t just social opportunities. They are meant to facilitate professional networking and reconnection with the university and its alumni resources. Gatherings include local alumni hosts as well as traveling members of Willamette’s staff.

“Seven Cities, One Night” is sponsored the Alumni Career Network, one of the major initiatives of the Alumni Association Board of Directors.
