Commencement ceremonies feature noted speakers and acclaimed scientists

Willamette University will bestow honorary degrees upon three prominent people at the College of Liberal Arts’ May 13 commencement. The ceremony begins at 3 p.m. and will be streamed live at willamette.edu/events/commencement/.

Gloria Rodriguez will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary doctorate in humane letters. She is the founder and former CEO of AVANCE, a nonprofit organization providing innovative education and family support services to predominantly Hispanic families in low-income, at-risk communities.

Nobel Prize-winning physicist Joseph Hooton Taylor Jr. will receive an honorary doctorate in science. While earning his master’s and doctorate at Princeton, Willamette University President Steve Thorsett studied under Taylor. Among other astrophysical research, they both use pulsars to study gravity.

Intel Corporate Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner will speak at Atkinson Graduate School of Management’s 9 a.m. commencement ceremony and will receive an honorary doctorate in science during the College of Liberal Arts’ 3 p.m. ceremony.

Rattner is an Intel senior fellow and head of Intel Labs, where he directs the company’s global research in processors, programming, systems, security, communications and, most recently, user experience and interaction.

At the College of Law’s 11:30 a.m. ceremony, Carlos R. Moreno will deliver the commencement address.

An award-winning jurist, Moreno’s career spans private and public practice at the city, state and federal levels. In addition to the decade spent on the California Supreme Court and his lifetime of service to the community, Moreno continues to give back as a board member for Arroyo Vista Family Health Center, a nonprofit community health-care provider.
