The Rose Ensemble
The Rose Ensemble performs at Willamette University Nov. 27
Willamette University’s Grace Goudy Distinguished Artists Series is celebrating its 30th anniversary season Nov. 27 with performances and master classes by The Rose Ensemble and guest soprano Nell Snaidas.
The Rose Ensemble’s concert, “Land of Three Faiths: Voices of Ancient Mediterranean Jews, Christians and Muslims,” begins at 7:30 p.m. in Hudson Hall, located within the Rogers Music Center.
“These performers are astonishing singers and instrumentalists,” says Anita King, chair of the music department and director of the Goudy Series. “We are certain to be transported by the beauty of the singers' sound, the emotion and soulfulness of these early vocal pieces and the unusual ancient instruments.”
The Rose Ensemble’s repertoire spans 1,000 years and more than 25 languages, including new research in Swedish, Middle Eastern and American vocal traditions. Founded in 1996 and based in Saint Paul, Minn., this 12-member ensemble tours internationally and has nine critically acclaimed recordings.
During its visit to Willamette, The Rose Ensemble will present workshops Nov. 26 and 27 with the Male Ensemble Willamette, Voce Femminile and Willamette Chamber Choir. The ensemble will also give a master class for solo singers and a lecture demonstration.
Titled “Discovering Ancient Harmonies Across Cultures, Borders and Religions,” the lecture explores the fascinating music and culture of medieval Spain, where Jews, Christians and Muslims lived together in a shared, artistic society. Admission to the residency events is free and the public is welcome to attend.
The Rose Ensemble is the first of this year’s two-concert Grace Goudy Distinguished Artists Series. On March 8, 2013 the Goudy Series will present the acclaimed baroque quartet, Red Priest.
Tickets to The Rose Ensemble concert cost $23 for a single ticket or $42 for the two-concert series, $8 for students and $18 for Willamette faculty and staff. They may be purchased at absolutelytix.com or in person at Travel Salem, 181 High St., 503-581-4325.
