Andrea Stolowitz, a visiting English professor at Willamette University, has received an Oregon Book Award for her play, “Antarktikos.”

“In the market-driven arts arena that we all now inhabit, it is awards such as these which validate the art and artist and therefore expand the life of the work,” Stolowitz said during her acceptance speech April 8. “I am grateful for this honor.”

“Antarktikos” is about saying goodbye to those one loves and reaching closure when people die. The play was the recipient of the 2012 Oregon Literary Fellowship in Drama, and it recently completed a three-week run at the Pittsburgh Playhouse.

In July, it will be published by Theatre Forum magazine.

Stolowitz is also starting rehearsal for “Ithaka,” a commissioned work for the Artists Repertory Theatre in Portland. The play tells the story of Marine Captain Elaine Edwards, who explores the country to battle her demons after returning home from a tour in Afghanistan. The play opens May 28.
