Office of the President

Larkin Smith

Goals for ASWU:

I hope to do some re-organization to make the Building Bridges Program more feasible and useful for TIUA and Willamette students, as its purpose and efforts are currently being covered with other programs. I plan to continue the work started by Matt Alex in making the Collegiate Readership program more visible to students, taking advantage of the NY Times sponsorship and opportunities.

On the agenda are crossword puzzle challenges, big-name speakers, and partnerships with professors for in-class application of our local and international news. The project I'm most excited about is working with the Senate. I see my position as a chance to motivate senators to take on ideas and follow through with them. Twenty minds and bodies could create a lot of change in one short year, and my goal is to have more returning senators for the 2009-2010 school year.

Campus Activities:

This is my fourth year at Willamette, so I'm staring graduation and the "what-are-you-doing-after-college" deal right in the face. My life plan includes more education, maybe in the form of a Master of Arts in Teaching, the goal being to become an educator. I have focused on English and American Ethnic Studies at Willamette, and I'm excited about getting my foot in the door for alternative education and anti-bias curriculum.

Interesting Fact:

I might have a serious addiction to Arrested Development...

VP of Administration

Elise Helvie

As the Vice President of the Administration, it is my job to see to it that things run smoothly in the ASWU Office. I hire and oversee staff, create an office budget, and coordinate office hours.

My other roles include running all student body elections, appointing students to serve on various campus committees, and overseeing ASWU Sound. I also am the chairperson for the ASWU Honors and Awards committee.

Goals for ASWU:

As you may or may not know, both the ASWU and WEB officers moved over to the second floor of the University Center. This was an exciting process for us, and we feel that our new office will make us both more visible and accessible for the students.

One of my main goals for the year is to establish a reliable system by which students are appointed to serve on the various committees on campus. The appointments would provide that all areas of campus are well-represented. I would also like to provide a way that student committee members are able to share the developments within their committee with the student body.

I would also like to work with the other executive officers towards the implementation of an honor code within the College of Liberal Arts. I feel that such implementation would not only enhance the Willamette experience, but it would also increase our ranking amongst our peer institutions.

Campus Activities:

I am a senior Biochemistry and Economics double major from Boise, Idaho. I am a member of Alpha Chi Omega and have played on the Willamette Women’s Tennis Team.

Interesting Fact:

I want to learn to rope cattle from horseback!

VP of Finances

Colin Waite

As the Vice President of Finances, it is my job to properly distribute student body fees throughout university student organizations. My main duty is serving as chairperson of the Finance Board, which is responsible for allocating student body fees to clubs in order to draft an annual budget. I also perform audits of WEB and Collegian once a semester in order to ensure these organizations are using their ASWU Constitutional Allocations efficiently. I'm also in constant communication with the Willamette Accounting department in order to ensure student organizations are properly maintaining their ASWU club accounts.

Goals for ASWU:

I hope to increase the ease of which clubs are able to get funding in order to put on their events. I hope this can help clubs provide more consistent, quality programming on our campus. This means being able to apply for money whenever an opportunity or idea for an event comes up. I also want to encourage student organizations to take advantage of their annual ASWU allocations. ASWU hopes that funding provided to clubs will encourage unique campus-wide events that will appeal to diverse groups of students on campus.

Campus Activities:

I am a Film Studies major and Physics Minor. I am a member of Beta Theta Pi Fraternity and serve on IFC Exec Board.

Interesting Fact:

I spent last summer living in LA learning how expensive it is to live in LA.
