  • November 21th, 2003

    Students for Choice sponsored the first Rock for Choice concert at Willamette. It was held in the Bistro.


  • April 10th, 2003

    Students for Choice members participated in Pro-Choice Lobby Day, sponsored by Oregon NARAL and the Pro-Choice Coalition of Oregon. The Oregon Legislature introduced six anti-choice bills this session, including a 24-hour mandatory waiting period with biased counseling requirements and Students for Choice has been working with Oregon NARAL to oppose these anti-choice measures.


  • March 7th, 2003

    Students for Choice members participated in Student Lobby Day, sponsored by Oregon NARAL, at the Salem state capitol. The purpose of Student Lobby Day is to provide students from all across the state with the opportunity to speak with their legislators regarding issues concerning women's reproductive health care. Anti-choice legislators have repeatedly attempted to pass laws that would force teens to notify their parents prior to an abortion, and also to limit sexuality/HIV Aids education for youth.

    Students for Choice members attended a committee hearing at the Salem state capitol to show pro-choice support along with Oregon NARAL in opposing an anti-choice measure.


  • February 10th through February 14th, 2003

    Students for Choice members tabled in the UC for the fourth annual "Kisses and Condoms" fundraiser. This year Students for Choice sent the money we raised to Planned Parenthood on behalf of President Bush.


  • October 28thth and November 4thth, 2002

    Members of Students for Choice volunteered to phone bank for Oregon NARAL to help Get Out the Vote for pro-choice candidates Brian Johnston for state Senate, Bill Bradbury for US Sentate and Ted Kulongowski for Governor.


  • October 12thth, 2002

    Over 20 members of Students for Choice attended the second annual Disco for Choice in Portland. Over 200 pro-choice activists attended to celebrate reproductive rights and raise money for Planned Parenthood.


  • September 16th, 2002

    Students for Choice held its first meeting of the Fall 2002 semester. 27 students attended the meeting and the leaders and members discussed the plans for the year and how the students can get involved to protect and promote reproductive rights.


  • September 12thth, 2002

    Students for Choice leaders participated in the Activities Fair in the Quad and signed up many new members.


  • April 20th, 2002

    Students for Choice and Oregon NARAL sponsored a large pro-choice training in the UC. Pro-choice activists from all over Oregon attended different workshops to learn how to organize and engage in activism around reproductive rights issues.


  • April 12th, 2002

    Students for Choice along with the Chaplain's Office sponsored a presentation by Daniel McGuire about his book, Sacred Choices: The Right to Contraception and Abortion in Ten World Religions. The event took place in the Alumni Lounge and was attended by students and community members.

    At the 2002 Campus Life Honors and Awards Ceremony Students for Choice won the Outstanding Student Organization award.


  • April 4th, 2002

    Students for Choice members attended a NARAL Salem Choice Action Team meeting in the Autzen room of the UC to go over the recent 2002 candidate interviews and future plans for the 2002 elections.


  • March 25th, 2002

    Students for Choice wrote to all of Oregon's Congressional House members and both Senators to urge them to oppose the Teen Endangerment Act. Click here to read our letters.

    Students for Choice members and representatives from the student health center gave a program and lecture on Emergency Contraception to the sororities.

    Students for Choice members attended a NARAL Salem Choice Action Team meeting in the Autzen room of the UC to discuss the upcoming elections and political organizing for Choice in 2002.

    Students for Choice members attended a NARAL Salem Choice Action Team meeting in the Autzen room of the UC.


  • March 5th, 2002

    Students for Choice sponsored the Jane program in Cone Chapel. Over 150 people attended to watch a documentary about the underground abortion network and listen to a speaker who was a patient of the Jane service.

    Students for Choice members attended a NARAL Salem Choice Action Team meeting in the Autzen room of the UC.


  • February 15th, 2002

    Students for Choice sent our second annual letter to President Bush telling him that a donation was being made on his behalf to a clinic that performs abortions. Students for Choice collected donations and signatures from its members and other students and the money will go to the clinic where the members of Students for Choice volunteer as escorts.   • February 6th, 7th, 8th, 11th, 12th, 13th, 2002

    Students for Choice members tabled in the UC for the third annual "Kisses and Condoms" fundraiser. This year we sold over 350 bags for Valentines day and raised 486 dollars for our clinic to donate on behalf of President Bush.

    Students for Choice members and local pro-choice community members attended another Oregon NARAL Willamette Valley Choice Action Team meeting in the Autzen room in the University Center. At this meeting the members finalized the details for the upcoming Roe v Wade celebration.

    Students for Choice members visited Linfield college to help them organize and start up a pro-choice group on their campus.

    Students for Choice members and local pro-choice community members attended the Oregon NARAL Choice Choice Action Team meeting in the Autzen room in the University Center. The meeting was to get pro-choice activists organized for NARAL's Choice for America Campaign, and to work towards gaining access to Emergency Contraception and Contraceptive Equity for all women in the Willamette Valley.

    Students for Choice members attended the Disco for Choice fundraiser in Portland that was sponsored by Planned Parenthood.

    Students for Choice members attended the Oregon NARAL Volunteer Appreciation Night at Mimi's Pizzeria in Salem. Oregon NARAL was celebrating the successfull 2001 Oregon legislative session and the Summer Education and Outreach program.

    Students for Choice participated in the Activities Fair held in the quad and signed up many new members.


  • May 7th, 2001

    Students for Choice members attended a committee hearing at the Salem state capitol. HB 3830 was being heard by the Rules, Redistricting and Public Affairs committee. Students for Choice was there to show pro-choice support along with NARAL and Planned Parenthood.

    Students for Choice wrote to Oregon State Representative Jackie Winters and State Senate President Gene Derfler urging them to oppose the HB 3830 which would create a 24 hour delay and subject women to biased anti-choice counseling.

    Students for Choice members attended a meeting of local NARAL volunteers and activists that was held in the Harrison room across from the Women's Center room on campus.

    Students for Choice gave a framed certificate of appreciation and a poem to our clinic for Abortion Providers' Appreciation Day.

    Students for Choice participated in the Student Activities Fair held in the Cat Cavern. SFC signed up new members and gained exposure through the event.


  • February 7th, 8th, 9th, 12th, and 13th, 2001

    Students for Choice held its second annual "Kisses and Condoms" fundraiser by tabling in the U.C. and in Goudy. The fundraiser was far more successfull this year and Students for Choice sold over 175 "Kisses and Condoms" bags.

    Students for Choice President Nat Okey wrote an article in the Collegian about President Bush reinstating the Global Gag Rule that denies U.S. funds to international family planning organizations that perform or counsel for abortions or lobby their government for abortion rights.     Students For Choice participated in the Student Activities Fair held in the Cat Cavern. SFC signed up many new members and gained exposure through the event.

    Students For Choice participated in the International Women's Day celebration held in Jackson Plaza. Students For Choice held a table with information and petitions about: domestic family planning and funding, international family planning and funding, and the campaign to remove the Vatican's voting power from the U.N.



  • February 22th, 2000

    Students For Choice sent letters to the Oregon Representatives and Senators to urge them to vote no on Senate Bill 661/H.R. 1218. This bill would make it illegal for anyone other than a parent to transport a minor across state lines to undergo an abortion. Click here to read why this bill is a bad idea.     Students For Choice ran its first annual "Kisses and Condoms" fundraiser by tabling in the U.C. and in Goudy Commons.



  • January 20th, 2000

    Students For Choice attended "A Candlelight Celebration to commemorate the 27th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade" at the First Congregational Church here in Salem. Governor Kitzhaber and many other Oregon politicians were there. The Governor was presented with the first annual Justice Blackmun award. The award is going to be given annually to an individual or organization whose ideas, actions and beliefs continue Blackmun's legacy and commitment to a woman's right to choose. The Governor has successfully vetoed several anti-choice bills.



  • November 18th, 1999

    Students for Choice President Nat Okey wrote an article for the Willamette newspaper, the Collegian, about the threat that George W. Bush would pose to abortion and reproductive rights. Click here to read the article.
