Riding
an ostrich, bungee jumping off the highest bridge in the world,
eating dinner in a cave and spending the night in a converted prison
are just a few of the unforgettable adventures that the Willamette
Chamber Choir experienced during its two-week trip to South Africa
in May. In addition to sight seeing and going on safari, the choir
performed eight concerts to audiences drawn to hear them sing “Hope
for Resolution,” a South-African anthem that led Archbishop
Desmond Tutu to invite the group to his home country.
While on the other side of the Atlantic, the choir members stayed
in close touch with home. The latest technology and Willamette’s
website gave the students a way to share their excitement and experiences
with family and friends. Students posted messages on Willamette’s
website and families responded by sending good wishes to their sons
and daughters halfway across the world.
All messages are viewable to visitors and are quite entertaining.
Two students wrote: “I don’t think that I could ever
communicate all the amazing things that I have seen here.”
… “We’ve eaten crocodile and antelope, and we’ve
seen African elephants. This has been the most amazing dream.”

This unprecedented journey would not have been possible without
the support of Willamette students, parents, alumni, staff and faculty
that raised $80,000 to send the 49 students to South Africa.
