MAT Admission Checklist
To apply for admission to the School of Education, applicants must submit all of the following:
-
A Completed MAT Application for Admission
The application, including essays, accompanied by a $50 non-refundable application fee. (The $50 application fee is waived for applications submitted online. Start an online application.) -
Two Letters of Recommendation
Letters of recommendation are required for all applicants and should be completed by persons who have supervised the applicant while working with school-age children or youth. It is essential that all applicants obtain and show evidence of some experience, either volunteer or paid, with youth of an appropriate age before applying to this program. Experience through local schools, churches, the YWCA or YMCA, scouting groups or community centers is vital to the application process and evaluated carefully by the Admission Committee. -
Official Final Transcript
An official transscript is required from each of the colleges previously attended. (A 3.0 cumulative grade point average is generally seen as the minimum acceptable.) Transcripts for current and former Willamette University students will be automatically requested from the Office of the Registrar by the Office of Admission. However, the applicant should arrange to have the official transcript sent directly to the Office of Admission if any additional colleges have been attended. If you enroll at Willamette, we will need an additional copy of each transcript, as well as two degree-bearing transcripts, if the transcripts we reviewed were received before you graduated. -
Evidence of Basic Skills Competency
These test results are required by the Teacher Standards and Practices Commission (TSPC) for the State of Oregon. In order to establish basic skills competency all applicants must successfully pass either the California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) or the Praxis I: Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST) or the Praxis I: Computer Based Test (CBT). -
Passing Scores on Subject Exams
These test scores should be specific to the level and subject area of interest. Please visit the Oregon Educator Licensure Assessments (ORELA, for early childhood, elementary and middle-school teachers) or Praxis II (for high-school and middle-school subjects) web sites to learn about and register for the appropriate subject examinations for your desired level of authorization. These are required for entry into the full-time program and before the start of the second year of the Aspire program. -
Background / Criminal History Disclosure Statements
This signed statement is required in our application process as a precursor to the statement the applicant will complete for the school district in which they will student teach (as required by the State of Oregon). We will send you a copy automatically after we receive your Application for Admission, or you can download the Disclosure Statement in advance to submit it with your application.
