  STUDENT STORY
Katherine Eum '05
G. Herbert Smith Scholar
When Katherine Eum is not organizing campus activities as a member of Hall Council, the Hawaii Club and Willamette Events Board, she volunteers with the University’s community service organization like Habitat for Humanity and Circle K. But her biggest kicks come from volunteering as a soccer coach for Richmond Elementary School: “The Kids are a lot of fun.” Eum has managed her busy life while holding a near perfect g.p.a. with courses that include Japanese, chemistry, multivariable calculus and environmental systems under stress. “I want to take advantage of every experience I can here at Willamette.”

Development: Areas to Give

An exam being handed back to a student. What Will I Become? Endowed Scholarships

“I would like to practice in the field of environmental law some day,” says Kathrine Eum ’05, an environmental studies major from Wahiawa, Hawaii, who is making waves as an outstanding student and motivated University and community participant. “I love being at a smaller school,” says Eum, who enjoys the close interaction she has with her professors. “I am amazed by the level of accessibility I have to my professors.”

Eum is the recipient of the G. Herbert Smith Scholarship, which is awarded to students who demonstrate high A stack of booksacademic achievement and a commitment to public service. The scholarship has provided critical support to Eum as she brings creative new dimensions to Willamette. “I am honored to be a recipient of the G. Herbert Smith Scholarship; it really helped make Willamette possible for me.”

Endowed scholarships help fulfill the dreams of many students like Eum, who energize our campus through their leadership, artistry, intellect and character, but who cannot afford a private college education on their own. Our academically and socially diverse community is the source of Willamette’s strength and distinctiveness; however, it has placed an increasing burden on the University’s fiscal resources.

The list of named Willamette scholarship funds is long; however, a number of our named scholarships are not funded at today’s endowment level. A listing of these scholarships and how to contribute to them can be found on the Building Named Fund Scholarships page.
