PLAGIARISM AWARENESS AND PREVENTION

What is plagiarism? According to the Willamette University Plagiarism Policy web site (
http://www.willamette.edu/cla/catalog/Sect3/aca.html#plag) "Cheating is any form of intellectual dishonesty or misrepresentation of one’s knowledge. Plagiarism, a form of cheating, consists of representing someone else’s work as one’s own." Still have questions? Try the helpful and informative Turnitin FAQ site. Think you already know how to recognize plagiarized material? Try this test (from Indiana University).

How students plagiarize:

  • Copying an entire tract or even a whole paper and presenting it as one's own work
  • Downloading a free paper or buying a paper mill document from the Internet
  • Misquoting or only partially quoting a source
  • Improperly paraphrasing without citing the author
  • Making up a source
  • "Dumbing down" or otherwise modifying a source
Why do students plagiarize? Understanding causes can assist in prevention.
  • Poor study and time management habits
  • Lack of interest in or sense of ownership of the assignment
  • Poor writing skills
  • Ignorance - they may not understand what plagiarism is, how to properly cite sources, and why giving proper credit is important
Tips for prevention:
  • Make students aware of your plagiarism policy
  • Demonstrate correct citation procedures - including paraphrasing
  • Give specific (non-general), personalized writing assignments
  • Watch for inconsistent writing style (obtain a baseline writing sample)
  • Let students know you are aware of plagiarism web sites
  • Teach them how to use plagiarism prevention sites as a class
