For
a number of years, Willamette University has used
the Copyright Clearance Center services to assist
faculty in preparing coursepacks for sale to students
taking their classes. The CCC offers "one-stop-shopping"
which allows faculty to clear copyright on articles,
books and periodicals used to produce anthologies
for classes, thus easing the burden of seeking
copyright permission through individual sources. CCC now also offers electronic course content service (ECCS) for use in course management programs such as Blackboard as well as a digital permissions service (DPS) for using copyrighted materials in such formats as e-mail and the Internet.
CCC has made their website user friendly, so we recommend that all faculty use their online pay-per-use service by going directly to http://www.copyright.com. Once there you may take one of two steps. You may click on the QuickLink "New to Copyright.Com: Get started" in the middle bottom of the first page or proceed to open an account by clicking the “Academic: Get Started” link on the upper left side. From there go to the “Pay-per-use Permissions Service: Learn More” button and open an account via the link at the bottom of the page. It is valuable to first read the “FAQs – pay-per-use Permissions Services" found on the right side of that page before opening your account.
In
addition, there is the usual charge for the cost
of copying at the Willamette Print/Design Center. All billing and crediting of departmental accounts is transacted between the Print/Design Center, Willamette Store and originating department. WITS forwards all invoices directly to the requester.
Faculty
should always get clearance for 25% more than
anticipated number of copies needed to allow for
the possibility of over-enrollment. Otherwise
additional permission must be sought from the
CCC if number sold exceeds the number that permission
was originally granted for.
A
Word of Caution: CCC no longer sends out a
form for you to reduce the number of copies you
originally asked for. You must check back to your
account on their website within the first 60 days
of the semester in which you are using your class anthologies and
change the numbers to the actual number of copies
sold or you will be billed for the entire amount.
Also, if you checked on various documents and
decided not to use them but failed to delete them
from your coursepack, you will be billed for them.
Complete
information about copyright clearance procedures
and fees may be obtained through the CCC website.
